When asked to define Pentadox, I usually say, “it is Sylvain, Bram and me, making music together.” And if this collective experience has been so fruitful, the reason is probably that, ever since our first meeting, our sole intention has been to make music as a unit. I like to call it an “anti-project” because the music always seems to outstrip any projection we could formulate as a band. No agenda.

Zooming in. What do we like in music? Flow, playfulness, melody, mystery, rhythm, imaginary spaces, counterpoint, the act of folding and unfolding sounds and ideas, fun, dance, trust, patience, multidimensional time and structures, calling on the subconscious — the ways in which we combine and structure these elements within the music have undoubtedly evolved over time, but our ethos remains the same: place intuition and interaction at the very center of the collective process.

Zooming out. Since its inception in 2015, Pentadox has followed a double path by inviting guest musicians and multidisciplinary artists, and by functioning as a trio. As if it were tomorrow is our first release documenting the latter context. Playing as a trio allows for greater intimacy with the music, silence, imagination. It also gives each of us more mobility within the trio: like Escher’s staircases, the pull of gravity can switch at any time. All jumps permitted!

Most live albums offer the listener a new perspective on compositions previously released on studio albums. For As if it were tomorrow, we wanted to record most of these compositions for the first time, in a context that included listeners. Their presence, like the physicality of space we all shared, gives the music a special orientation and feel.

Wenn man mich bittet, Pentadox zu definieren, sage ich gewöhnlich: „Das sind Sylvain, Bram und ich, die zusammen Musik machen.“ Und wenn diese kollektive Erfahrung so fruchtbar war, dann liegt das wahrscheinlich daran, dass es seit unserem ersten Treffen unsere einzige Absicht war, als Einheit Musik zu machen. Ich nenne es gerne ein „Anti-Projekt“, weil die Musik immer jede Projektion zu übertreffen scheint, die wir als Band formulieren könnten. Keine Agenda.

Heranzoomen. Was mögen wir an Musik? Fluss, Verspieltheit, Melodie, Mysterium, Rhythmus, imaginäre Räume, Kontrapunkt, das Falten und Entfalten von Klängen und Ideen, Spaß, Tanz, Vertrauen, Geduld, mehrdimensionale Zeit und Strukturen, das Aufrufen des Unterbewusstseins - die Art und Weise, wie wir diese Elemente in der Musik kombinieren und strukturieren, hat sich zweifellos im Laufe der Zeit weiterentwickelt, aber unser Ethos bleibt derselbe: Intuition und Interaktion in den Mittelpunkt des kollektiven Prozesses zu stellen.

Herauszoomen. Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 2015 hat Pentadox einen doppelten Weg eingeschlagen, indem es Gastmusiker und multidisziplinäre Künstler einlud und als Trio arbeitete. As if it were tomorrow ist unsere erste Veröffentlichung, die den letzteren Kontext dokumentiert. Das Spielen als Trio ermöglicht eine größere Intimität mit der Musik, Stille und Fantasie. Es gibt auch jedem von uns mehr Beweglichkeit innerhalb des Trios: wie bei Eschers Treppen kann die Anziehungskraft der Schwerkraft jederzeit wechseln. Alle Sprünge sind erlaubt!

Die meisten Live-Alben bieten dem Hörer eine neue Perspektive auf Kompositionen, die zuvor auf Studioalben veröffentlicht wurden. Für As if it were tomorrow wollten wir die meisten dieser Kompositionen zum ersten Mal aufnehmen, und zwar in einem Kontext, der die Zuhörer einschließt. Ihre Anwesenheit, wie die Körperlichkeit des Raumes, den wir alle gemeinsam nutzten, gibt der Musik eine besondere Ausrichtung und ein besonderes Gefühl.
