About the album

Referring to a musical work of the century such as George Gershwin's popular opera "Porgy and Bess" entails enormous risks. This is especially the case when this popular work has spawned many ubiquitous song classics. Hans Lüdemann also believes: "You have to have a good reason to tackle this" and, of course, a coherent concept for a new, own approach. This has succeeded brilliantly with "Porgy’s Dream". The very personal homage of Lüdemann and trumpeter Reiner Winterschladen is not content with competent interpretations in the usual jazz style. The duo is based on selected themes and unfolds an intense atmosphere in its freely interpreted pieces, which thoroughly lives up to the original work.

The starting point for this project was an "old love". Hans Lüdemann, the German pianist, composer and arranger with decades of stylistically far-reaching experience, is one of the countless fans of the great "Porgy and Bess” album by Miles Davis, recorded in the summer of 1958. At that time, arranger Gil Evans had designed the orchestral accompaniment for his trumpet with his extraordinary trademark. "I have had this album for an eternity and always liked it very much!," Lüdemann stated enthusiastically. When he was commissioned to compose the score for a musical at the Oper Köln in 2019, he came back to this album as inspiration, reference and motivation. In the course of the intensive examination of Gershwin's original work and, in parallel, with the Davis album (for which a good dozen pieces were taken), the desire for his own interpretation grew – as a matter of the heart. It was clear to him that a special approach was needed. "The question was: how can I handle the material respectfully, but find a way to access it in my own style?"
Lüdemann opted for an intimate form, a reduction in several respects. The connection with Reiner Winterschladen was obvious – especially since he had already dealt with "Porgy and Bess" (and the arrangements by Gil Evans) in the role of the feature soloist of the NDR big band. Lüdemann and Winterschladen have known each other since the mid-1990s. They have collaborated time and time again since then, one of those constant connections that even longer breaks cannot disrupt. Previous highlights include their duo recordings, which resulted in two wonderful album productions ("Mysterious Call” in 2001 and "Heavy Hearts” in 2013). Small biographical curiosity: Lüdemann is a native of Hamburg, but has been living in a small village near Bergisch-Gladbach for three decades; Winterschladen comes from Bergisch-Gladbach, but has been living in Hamburg for a long time.

They developed the final concept together and experimented with it. "Porgy's Dream" is a ballad album. Individual tracks were also created during production that deviated from this – and were discarded. Lüdemann and Winterschladen felt that their approach did not require any of the usual tempo and mood variations. "I think ballads have always been a strength of ours. We wanted this calm, basic ambiance; we wanted to leave room and not let the music get too dense. The ambiance was to be an essential guide.” In this context, Lüdemann emphasizes the emotional dimension of Gershwin's work and his story, into which he has delved deeply. "These are pieces that vibrate something in me, that are very close to people, that touch people."

That's exactly what you feel in every moment of this music. The wonderfully intimate duo moves freely within the material. Sometimes themes and harmonies are only played briefly. Nevertheless, the bond to the core is always there. One of the many qualities of this album is Winterschladen's narrative play on trumpet and flugelhorn, his "narrative tone", as Lüdemann says with a smile. This voice and Lüdemann's emotionally associative piano playing complement each other to create an all-round coherent, completely unique "Porgy and Bess” homage.

Concert dates with this program are in planning. Meanwhile, Reiner Winterschladen has recorded a new album with his regular band, the Nighthawks. Hans Lüdemann continues to keep an eye on his TransEuropeExpress Ensemble with an international lineup. In addition, he is putting the finishing touches on the opera "Manhattan Moon", whose premiere had to be postponed due to the coronavirus years. The same major work that also benefited from his involvement with Miles Davis' "Porgy and Bess” album.
Sich auf ein musikalisches Jahrhundertwerk wie George Gershwins populäre Oper „Porgy and Bess“ zu beziehen, birgt enorme Risiken. Allemal, wenn dieses populäre Werk viele allgegenwärtige Liedklassiker hervorgebracht hat. Auch Hans Lüdemann findet: „Man muss schon einen guten Grund haben, das anzugehen“ - sowie, ganz klar, ein stimmiges Konzept für einen neuen, eigenen Zugang. Mit „Porgy’s Dream“ ist das bravourös gelungen. Die ganz persönliche Hommage von Lüdemann und Trompeter Reiner Winterschladen begnügt sich nicht mit kompetenten Interpretationen nach gängiger Jazz-Manier. Das Duo lehnt sich an ausgewählte Themen an und entfaltet in seinen frei atmenden Stücken eine intensive Atmosphäre, die dem ursprünglichen Werk durch und durch gerecht wird.
Ausgangspunkt für dieses Projekt war eine „alte Liebe“. Hans Lüdemann, der deutsche Pianist, Komponist und Arrangeur mit jahrzehntelanger, stilistisch weit reichender Erfahrung, zählt zu den zahllosen Fans des großartigen „Porgy and Bess“-Albums von Miles Davis, aufgenommen im Sommer 1958. Arrangeur Gil Evans hatte damals mit seiner außerordentlichen Handschrift die orchestrale Begleitung für dessen Trompete gestaltet. „Ich habe dieses Album schon seit einer Ewigkeit und mochte es immer sehr!“, schwärmt Lüdemann. Als er 2019 einen Kompositionsauftrag für ein Musiktheaterstück an der Oper Köln erhielt, kam er auf dieses Album zurück: als Inspiration, Referenz und Motivation. Im Zuge der intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit dem Originalwerk Gershwins und, parallel, mit dem Davis-Album (für das ein gutes Dutzend Stücke übernommen wurde) wuchs die Lust an einer eigenen Verarbeitung – als Herzensangelegenheit. Wobei ihm klar war, dass es einer besonderen Herangehensweise bedarf. „Die Frage war: wie kann ich respektvoll mit dem Material umgehen, aber einen Weg finden für einen eigenen Zugang?“
Lüdemann entschied sich für eine intime Form, eine Reduktion in mehrfacher Hinsicht. Auf der Hand lag da die Verbindung mit Reiner Winterschladen – zumal der sich schon in der Rolle des Feature-Solisten der NDR Bigband mit „Porgy and Bess“ (und den Bearbeitungen von Gil Evans) auseinandergesetzt hatte. Lüdemann und Winterschladen kennen sich seit Mitte der 90er Jahre. Seither haben sie immer mal wieder zusammengearbeitet - eine dieser beständigen Verbindungen, denen auch längere Pausen nichts anhaben können. Zu den bisherigen Highlights gehören speziell die Duo-Unternehmungen, die in zwei wunderbare Albumproduktionen mündeten (2001 „Mysterious Call“, 2013 „Heavy Hearts“). Kleine biographische Kuriosität: Lüdemann ist gebürtiger Hamburger, lebt aber seit drei Jahrzehnten in einem kleinen Ort nahe Bergisch-Gladbach - Winterschladen stammt aus Bergisch-Gladbach, lebt aber schon lange in Hamburg.
Das endgültige Konzept haben sie gemeinsam entwickelt, dabei auch experimentiert. „Porgy’s Dream“ ist ein Balladen-Album. Bei der Produktion entstanden auch einzelne Tracks, die davon abweichen - und verworfen wurden. Lüdemann und Winterschladen spürten, dass ihre Herangehensweise keiner der üblichen Tempo- und Stimmungsvarianten bedarf. „Ich finde, Balladen waren schon immer eine Stärke von uns. Wir wollten diesen ruhigen Grundgestus, wir wollten Raum lassen und die Musik nicht so dicht werden lassen. Das Atmosphärische sollte ein wesentlicher Leitfaden sein.“ In diesem Zusammenhang betont Lüdemann die emotionale Dimension von Gershwins Werk und seiner Story, in die er sich tief hineinbegeben hat. „Das sind Stücke, die in mir etwas in Schwingung bringen, die einem selber sehr nahe gehen, die einen berühren.“
Genau das spürt man in jedem Moment dieser Musik. Das wunderbar vertraute Duo bewegt sich frei innerhalb des Materials. Manchmal klingen Themen und Harmonien sogar nur kurz an. Trotzdem ist die Bindung zum Kern stets vorhanden. Eine der vielen Qualitäten dieses Albums ist Winterschladens erzählerisches Spiel auf Trompete und Flügelhorn, sein „Erzähl-Ton“, wie Lüdemann lächelnd sagt. Diese Stimme und Lüdemanns gefühlvoll assoziierendes Klavierspiel ergänzen sich zu einer rundum schlüssigen, ganz und gar eigenen „Porgy and Bess“-Hommage.
Konzerttermine mit diesem Programm sind in Planung. Derweil hat Reiner Winterschladen ein neues Album mit seiner Stamm-Band aufgenommen, den Nighthawks. Hans Lüdemann hat weiterhin sein international besetztes TransEuropeExpress Ensemble im Blick. Außerdem legt er letzte Hand an die Oper „Manhattan Moon“, deren Premiere durch die Corona-Jahre aufgeschoben werden musste. Eben jenes Großwerk, das auch von seiner Beschäftigung mit dem „Porgy and Bess“-Album von Miles Davis profitiert hat.

As a solo pianist he improvised an „hommage a Köln concert“ in the Köln opera, he expands the acoustic piano sound with his „virtual piano“ into a microtonal instrument and he developed new playing techniques for the historic clavichord. In the concert series „die kunst des trios“, started in 2007, Lüdemann has created a wide range of piano trio conceptions, working together with an international cast of musical partners.
As a solo pianist and with his ensembles, Lüdemann has performed worldwide and is at home on festivals, concert stages and in clubs between Berlin, Bamako, Capetown, Delhi, Havana, Hongkong, New York and Paris. Performances include portrait concerts at the Musiktriennale Köln, appearances at EXPO 2000 Hannover, Jazzfest Berlin, Bachfest Leipzig, Offbeat Festival Basel, HIFA - Festival Harare, Copenhagen Jazzfestival, Elbjazz Hamburg and the opening of the „Budapest Music Centre“. Solo tours have led through Europe, Africa and North America. Lüdemann’s music is documented on over 40 CDs for renowned record labels and radio and tv productions. His biggest project so far, „die kunst des trios“, was released as a 5-CD-box and received the „ECHO Jazz award 2013“.

From the beginning, the creation and realization of original music was the motivation and focus of his work and his projects. In 1988 he introduced his first orchestral work, „Geschichte 2“, in 1994 the song cycle „Verloren ins weite Blau“ (Lost into the wide blue) for voices and chamber ensembles. Hans Lüdemann received composition commissions of the WDR, SWR, hR, the Ensemble Indigo, the NDR bigband, the duo Slaato/Reinecke, from Steinway & Sons and the „Kunststiftung NRW“. In 2014/15 he received the federal composition grant of the „Konrad Adenauer-Stiftung“. His works range from solo music and songs to chamber music and music for bigband, choir and orchestra. A number of his musical scores have been published by Schott, including the „Rhythmic Etudes“ for piano in 2015.

In 2002, Lüdemann was invited on a journey to Africa with German President Johannes Rau. He was appointed member of the Federal German composition jury for the Villa Massimo in Rome from 2003 - 2007. He taught Jazz piano and ensemble at the Musikhochschule Köln from 1993 - 2008, directed the „Creative Jazz Workshop“ at the European Academy Montepulciano/Italy 2001 - 2007, the „JeuneJazzJam Paris-Köln“ of the Musikhochschule Köln and CSNDP Paris in 2008 and taught as „Cornell Visiting Professor“ at Swarthmore College/USA in 2009/2010 and again in 2015/16.
