About the album

Careless Territories is the result of multiple factors. One is my recent reconnection with Belgian trombonist and phenom Phil Abraham who was invited last year as a jury member for my brass students at the Jazz Department in Luxembourg. This encounter set up the frontline and the aesthetical direction for the project - both Phil and I being huge fans of the Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer Quintet.

Another influential element is the recent nostalgic musical reflection I had on some past travels. For example, the title track ‘Careless Territories’ was written during a family trip to Apulia in the south of Italy. ‘Sunflower Eyes’ is a straightforward musical reaction to a romantic and life-changing weekend in Amsterdam. ‘Close by’ was born after a surprising rainy stop in Barcelona.

Lastly and more importantly ‘Careless Territories’ is the honest desire to expose a somehow multifaceted personal musical landscape; probably the result of a couple of years as an arranger for big bands. Variety is a source of vitality which I find nurturing. From swinging affairs and songwriting to more extended through-composed pieces, this album was nevertheless only made possible thanks to the strong musical appetite and curiosity of an exciting multi-generational band. The Quintet is composed of young lions and classmates from my College Years at Berklee or Manhattan School, but also experimented talents from the Belgian and French scene.

Ultimately, I believe the fire and excitement of youth meets the balance and wisdom of experience in this one, and I like to think it interestingly benefits the musical outcome. Overall, I hope it will create as much joy listening to it as we had putting it together.

Phil Abraham (trombone)

Evolution After studying the classical piano, the guitar and harmony, Phil Abraham was seduced by jazz and the trombone, on which he is self-taught. His stylistic evolution is parallel to the history of jazz, and even if he is a modern soloist today, he has worked with a wide variety of great musicians. Phil has taken part in more than sixty albums, eleven with his own group, with which he won many prizes. He has often been invited in big bands as a soloist. He took part in many recordings and concerts of the big band of the Belgian Radio (BRT). Phil Abraham also devotes his career to teaching, training courses and master-classes. ... Labbé's quintet offers current mainstream jazz on top level -grandios composed, professionally played, very awake, very clean...
Jazzthing, 23-8-2023

"Flugelhorn and trombone melt superbly in this recording. The album comes as a beautiful surprise and the music is enchanting. It speaks immediately."
Le Soir, 02-8-2023

... Intelligent sounds and sleek colors as well as occasional swinging interludes define the nine compositions of the leader.
Concerto 08 09 2023, 01-8-2023

... It a pleasure to listen to this quintet quintet as it explores its its musical boundaries and creates captivating jazz soundscapes landscapes.
Inmusic, 01-7-2023

This album is a nice discovery. The music speaks immediately, she enchants, she makes good, without being encumbered with avant-gardism or originality at all costs. Remy Labbé, Phil Abraham, Amaury Faye (piano), Alexandre Gilson (double bass) and Raphaël Pannier (drums) get along marvelously and have fun. And us too.
Le Soir, 02-8-2023

A wonderful album that once again proves that jazz in Belgium is at a very high level, just like in the Netherlands
Rootstime, 01-8-2023

... Careless Territories shines ..., sounds more "European", clearly breaks the chains of tradition, but does not abandon them completely, and thus the Rémy Labbé Quintet has succeeded in a relatively independent and individual production, which creates an exciting mood with freely developing passages of many songs ...
Musikansich, 24-7-2023

Phil Abraham feels in his element with this quartet which bathes in groove and post-bop. These ten titles give a broad reflection of the influences of the trumpeter, marked by the tradition of the "Great American Songbook", his taste for singing on "Say It", the influence of the Quintet of Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer in particular on the title " Then What” with an uptempo, his penchant for soft melodies like the romantic “Hephaistos”, and a keen sense of the good old groove revisited with today's sauce. An album that makes us vibrate!
Jazzmania, 13-6-2023

Flugelhorn, trombone, piano, double bass, drums. Rémy Labbé superbly assembles the timbres in "Careless Territories" which is released by Challenge.
Radio France, 09-6-2023

Some fine brass playing here, with Labbé's warm flugel sound blending with Abraham soft but flexible trombone playing. The Tunes have a lot of variety. Many of the songs transform in feel and rhythm along the way keeping us surprised and they don't stick to everyone soloing in order but rather mixe things up and include a lot of interplay. They're always conscious of this horn interplay working out some nice harmonized figures in the line. The horn arrangements are skillful and fun!
Adult Music, 05-6-2023

The same strength and the same clarity in his music as Bert Joris... A musician you really need to discover
RTBF, 23-5-2023

... Melodic solos on a solid foundation, a little old school swing, some 60s groove and of course tastefully executed ballads.
NaDann, 18-5-2023

... Melodic solos on a solid foundation, a little old school swing, some 60s groove and of course tastefully executed ballads.
Nadann Magazine, 18-5-2023

Faithful to the tradition defended by artists such as Woody Shaw, Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer or even Quincy Jones, Rémy Labbé has made an album as swinging as it is elegant and as refined as it is uninhibited. Careless Territories is totally successful, full of surprises and energy that we listen to and re-listen to with ever-renewed happiness. Listen to this "Say It", worthy of a Thad Jones!"
