Richard Strauss wrote his famous Violin Sonata in his early twenties, inspired by a summer in the Italian countryside, and by falling in love with Pauline de Ahna in the same year, who was later to become his wife.

Beethoven was just starting to realise the horror of losing his hearing by the time he wrote his Violin Sonata No.2 in his late twenties.

Kreislers Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen (Old Viennese Dances) are salon pieces which describe aspects of love including joy, sorrow and eternal love, the last of which he dedicated to his wife.

The hauntingly beautiful poem by Thomas Moore upon which Ernst based his The Last Rose of Summer variations captures the intensity of love, of loss and of the youthful questioning of the future. The title of the Irish air the poem is set to is The Young Mans Dream, originally Aislean an Oigfear.

Born in New Zealand in 1990, Benjamin Baker first picked up a violin at the age of three. Four years later he had notched up seven television appearances in New Zealand and played with the celebrated violinist Nigel Kennedy, who recommended he apply to The Yehudi Menuhin School in London. In 2007 Benjamin's debut at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra was described by The Daily Telegraph as hugely impressive.

A consummate musician, Robert Thompson is equally at home as soloist and chamber musician. He has performed as soloist at Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, the Leeds and Nottingham International Piano Series, and chamber music performances at Wigmore Hall and The Sage Gateshead.

Op dit album spelen violist Benjamin Baker en pianist Robert Thompson een aantal intieme vioolsonates van vier componisten. De twee musici kozen voor een repertoire rond thema's als jeugd, liefde en verlies. Muziek die varieert van vrolijk en uitbundig tot stil en ingetogen, met een enkel vleugje droevenis. Het album dat vernoemd is naar het prachtige gedicht 'The Last Rose of Summer' van Thomas Moore is absoluut de moeite van het beluisteren waard.

Nog maar net twintig was Richard Strauss, toen hij zijn beroemde Vioolsonate schreef. Geïnspireerd door een warme zomer op het Italiaanse platteland, en Pauline de Ahna op wie hij datzelfde jaar verliefd werd. Later zou Pauline zijn echtgenote worden.
Ludwig van Beethoven daarentegen ging richting de dertig toen hij zijn Vioolsonate nr. 2 schreef. In die periode was het ook dat hij zich de verschrikking van zijn beginnende doofheid realiseerde.
Fritz Kreisler's Alt-Wiener Tanzweizen (Oude Weense Dansen) zijn salonstukken die de aspecten van de liefde beschrijven, zoals vreugde, droefheid en eeuwige liefde. Het stuk over de eeuwige liefde droeg hij op aan zijn vrouw.

Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst baseerde zijn Étude no. 6, Variations on the Irish Air, op het wonderschone gedicht The Last Rose of Summer van de Ierse dichter Thomas Moore. Het gedicht behelst elementen als de intensiteit van de liefde, verlies en de zoektocht van de jeugd naar de toekomst. Het gedicht dat stamt uit 1805, werd enkele jaren later op de muziek van het Ierse volkswijsje The Young Man's Dream, oorspronkelijk Aislean an Oigfear gezet. John Andrew Stevenson schreef de originele pianobegeleiding. Later in de 19e en 20ste eeuw gevolgd door diverse andere arrangementen.

Benjamin Baker in 1990 geboren in Nieuw-Zeeland, pakte al op driejarige leeftijd een viool op. Vier jaar later had hij in Nieuw-Zeeland al zeven keer voor televisie opgetreden. Ook mocht hij samenspelen met de vermaarde violist Nigel Kennedy, die de jonge Baker aanraadde om toelating aan te vragen tot de prestigieuze Yehudi Menuhin School in Londen. In 2007 debuteerde Baker in de Royal Albert Hall samen met het Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. Volgens The Daily Telegraph "een hoogst indrukwekkend optreden". De Britse pianist Robert Thompson voelt zich zowel solist als kamermusicus en beheerst beide disciplines even goed.
