About the album
On Saturday February 15th, Felix Schlarmann (1982) will present “Counterlife”, his first album as a leader, at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Over the past years, Felix focused on being a bandleader and composer, in addition playing with numerous other projects.
This versatile drummer’s music consists of fragile melodies and energetic explosions; an emotional sound filled with contradiction.
Schlarmann earned his reputation in the Dutch Jazz scene as the drummer of the power jazz group BRUUT! with which he has performed all over the globe, as well as with the famous Dutch saxophone player Jasper Blom, with whom he brings the music of Franz Schubert to the big stages with the group Mechanical Duck.
The musicians in Felix Schlarmann’s group belong to the rising stars of the young Dutch scene: Piano player Franz von Chossy created a name for himself all over Europe and beyond. Saxophone player Lars Dietrich earned his stripes, as part of the New York jazz scene, by working with many great musicians such as John Escreet and David Binney. Floris van der Vlugt worked with countless artists in the Netherlands and has just started his own young all-star septet ”Windkracht 7”. Young British bass player Pat Cleaver managed to become one the most wanted players in the country, in just a few years.

Op zaterdag 15 februari 2014 presenteert Felix Schlarmann (1982) zijn eerste eigen CD getiteld “Counterlife” in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam. De afgelopen jaren heeft Felix zich, naast het spelen met talloze projecten, ook op zijn kwaliteiten als bandleider en componist gericht. Het resultaat is muziek die wordt gekenmerkt door sierlijke melodieën en energieke uitbarstingen: een fragiel en emotioneel geluid vol tegenstellingen.
Schlarmann is inmiddels geen onbekende meer in de Nederlandse Jazzkringen. Als drummer van het powerjazz succesbandje BRUUT! werkt hij op internationaal niveau. Ook de samenwerking met tenorsaxofonist Jasper Blom in hun Schubert project Mechanical Duck brengt hem op de bekendere Nederlandse podia.
Het kwintet bestaat uit jonge en veelbelovende musici. Pianist Franz von Chossy geniet met zijn eigen projecten in heel Europa bekendheid. Saxofonist Lars Dietrich woonde de afgelopen jaren in New York en speelde daar met o.a. John Escreet en David Binney. Felix Schlarmann (1982) präsentiert am 15. Februar 2014 sein Debütalbum „Counterlife“ im weltbekannten Bimhuis in Amsterdam. In den letzten Jahren hat sich der in Amsterdam lebende deutsche Schlagzeuger, neben seinen Tätigkeiten in zahlreichen Projekten, auch auf seine Rolle als Bandleader und Komponist konzentriert.
Das Ergebnis sind Kompositionen, die in ihrer Melodik fragil und ausdrucksstark sind, daneben immer wieder zu energiegeladenen eruptiven Ausbrüchen führen; beide musikalischen Bereich bilden das Fundament seiner Musik Schlarmann ist in der holländischen Jazzszene kein Unbekannter mehr. Mit der Powerjazzformation BRUUT! arbeitet er auf internationalem Niveau. Auch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem in den Niederlanden sehr bekannten Saxophonisten Jasper Blom in ihrem Schubert Projekt Mechanical Duck lässt ihn auf allen großen Bühnen seiner neuen Heimat gastieren.
Das Quintett um Bandleader Schlarmann stellt sich aus vielversprechenden Musikern der jungen niederländischen Szene zusammen. Der in Deutschland geborene Pianist Franz von Chossy genießt mit eigenen Projekten europaweite Bekanntheit. Saxofonist Lars Dietrich wohnte jahrelang in New York und arbeitete dort regelmäßig mit u.a. David Binney und John Escreet. Floris van der Vlugt macht derzeit Furore mit einer eigenen jungen All-Star Besetzung und der junge englische Bassist Pat Cleaver hat es in Kürze zu einem der meistgefragten Musikern Hollands gebracht.
