About the album

This fascinating recording brings two contrasting composers together, linked by their 3rd violin and piano sonatas. Grieg’s third and final violin sonata was finished in January 1887, dedicated to the German painter Franz Lenbach. Medtner’s 3rd sonata was also his last one and this was dedicated to his brother Emil, completed in 1938 and premiered the following year at the Aeolian Hall, London by the violinist Arthur Catterall and Medtner himself at the piano

His record dedicated to Schubert for the Fondamenta label was unanimously greeted by critics: "From the very beginning of the D960 Sonata, we are struck by a very beautiful sound which leads us into that outstanding piece as in a dream. Indeed, such sound control isn’t given to everyone and contributes to the bewitchment we feel" Pianiste Magazine "Frédéric D'Oria-Nicolas has captured the essence of the twenty-third sonata outstandingly. In addition to the exceptional sonority, the style is natural, steady, assured and elegant" Concertonet "His vision is both spectacular and humble, never forced upon us but always guided, so that it leaves us in suspense, plunged into a musing close to ecstasy" Resmusica.
In 2010 Frédéric D’Oria-Nicolas along with the violinist Svetlin Roussev recorded the 3rd sonatas by Grieg and by Medtner for the Fondamenta label. That recording was acclaimed by the major critics in all Europe and was granted prestigious awards, such as the « M » of Mezzo Channel, Choice of France Musique, Resmusica Key, 4 Stars Classica, 5 Diapasons. "Remarkable interpretation, all in sensitivity full of images and emotions is worthy to the one recorded in 1928 by Kreisler and Rachmaninov" L’Education Musicale "A fascinating recording" Presto Classical "That recording with its attractive presentation and its impeccable sound recording exudes the love for music: a harmonious work of architecture and passion" Concertonet "Roussev and D’Oria-Nicolas managed perfectly to bring to mind orchestral sonorities imagined by Medtner with wonderful tonal vibrancy and arresting colouring." Classic FM Magazine Strong of his 360-work-repertoire, Frédéric D’Oria-Nicolas has performed in more than 23 countries – at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Saint-Petersburg Hermitage, Tbilisi Conservatory (Georgia), salle Gaveau, Arsenal de Metz, Oratoire du Louvre, the Hamamatsu Act City (Japan), the Shanghai Oriental Center (China), the Dharwamangsa Ballroom (Indonesia), the AV-Intelligence Hall (Singapore), the Munsterland Festival (Germany, the Saint-Petersburg White Nights Festival, Kuhmo Festival (Finland), Estate Musicale di Portogruaro (Italy), Amsterdam Grachten Festival (Netherlands), Bratislava International Festival (Slovakia), Festival de Saint-Denis, Festival de Prades, Festival de Colmar… He is regularly invited at various French and foreign radios and television channels such as France 2, Kultura (Russia), WDR 3 (Germany), France-Musique, France-Culture, Radio-Classique… In 2009, his noteworthy Two Piano recital in Paris with Alexander Kobrin has been broadcasted by Mezzo Channel, in 39 countries.

Edvard Grieg

Edvard Hagerup Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use and development of Norwegian folk music in his own compositions put the music of Norway in the international spectrum, as well as helping to develop a national identity, much as Jean Sibelius and Antonín Dvořák did in Finland and Bohemia, respectively. Grieg is regarded as simultaneously nationalistic and cosmopolitan in his orientation, for although born in Bergen and buried there, he travelled widely throughout Europe, and considered his music to express both the beauty of Norwegian rural life and the culture of Europe as a whole. He is the most celebrated person from the city of Bergen, with numerous statues depicting his image, and many cultural entities named after him.

Nikolai Medtner

The Russian composer and pianist Nikolai Medtner was a younger contemporary of Scriabin and Rachmaninov, who wrote a substantial amount of works, all including the piano, amongst others piano and violin sonatas, piano concertos, songs and a few shorter pieces for piano. 38 of these pieces are collected under the name Skazki (Fairy Tales) and contain Medtners most appealing and original music. Despite his declining health, Medtner succeeded in recording several of his works before his death in 1951. His compositions became neglected in the following 25 years. Nowadays he is more and more often recognized as one of the most significant Russian piano composers, and several recordings of his piano works and a few of his songs are available.
