About the album

What happens when three restless musicians enter the world of John Coltrane, not to recreate it, but to see where it might lead?

There are musicians who play the music of the past. And there are those who listen for what is still waiting to be discovered inside it.
In 2026, the centenary of John Coltrane’s birth becomes the starting point for a new journey. On MiXMONK Supreme, Joey Baron, Bram De Looze and Robin Verheyen immerse themselves in the music of one of jazz’s most visionary voices, allowing his spirit of freedom, intensity and discovery to spark something entirely their own.

Recorded during a residency at Muziekcentrum De Bijloke, the album feels less like a tribute than a conversation across time. Coltrane’s music opens the door; MiXMONK walks through it with its own unmistakable energy. New original compositions meet music from Crescent, Coltrane’s deeply lyrical and intimate masterpiece, reshaped through the trio’s instinctive interplay and adventurous imagination.

There is reverence here, but no nostalgia. The music moves, breathes and takes unexpected turns. Baron, De Looze and Verheyen listen closely to each other, leaving space for surprise and allowing every piece to become a place of exploration. Nothing is fixed. Themes appear, disappear and return transformed. Silence becomes part of the conversation. A rhythm can suddenly loosen its grip. A familiar melody finds another way of breathing.

MiXMONK began in 2017 as a celebration of Thelonious Monk’s centenary. What started as a tribute soon grew into something more enduring: a meeting of three singular musical minds, bringing together the inventive spirit of Belgian jazz with the extraordinary presence of American drum legend Joey Baron.

Pianist Bram De Looze and saxophonist Robin Verheyen have each developed distinctive voices on the international jazz scene, while Joey Baron has spent decades shaping some of the most adventurous music of his generation, through collaborations with artists including John Zorn, Bill Frisell and Marc Copland.

Their first two albums, MiXMONK (2019) and On The Loose (2022), established the trio’s unique chemistry: playful, fearless and deeply connected.

With MiXMONK Supreme, that chemistry enters new territory. It is not an answer to Coltrane. It is a continuation of the question.
Coltrane is the spark. The rest is discovery.

Joey Baron (drums)

Baron, who is of Jewish heritage, was born on June 26, 1955, in Richmond, Virginia. When he was nine, he taught himself how to play the drums. As a teenager, he played in rock bands and dixieland jazz groups and was given his first gig opportunity at the age of 13 when pianist BJ Doyle's regular drummer took ill and she knew he was a keeper after just minutes. After high school, he spent a year at the Berklee College of Music. He moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970s and embarked on a professional career, playing with Carmen McRae and Al Jarreau. He worked as a freelance drummer and session musician with Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, and Hampton Hawes.[1] In 1982 he moved to New York City and joined guitarist Bill Frisell,...

In 1982 he moved to New York City and joined guitarist Bill Frisell, with whom he would play often throughout his career. He also played in groups with Red Rodney, Fred Hersch, Enrico Pieranunzi, and Marc Johnson. Starting in the late 1980s, he became a bigger part of the avant-garde jazz scene when he played regularly at the Knitting Factory, recorded with singer Laurie Anderson, and began a long association with John Zorn. For several years he participated in Zorn's projects Naked City and Masada.[1]

Baron contributed to David Bowie's Outside (1995). Bowie would later praise Baron, stating: "Metronomes shake in fear, he's so steady."[2]

Robin Verheyen (saxophone)

At 40, Robin Verheyen is considered one of the top European saxophone players and composers having made NYC and the US musician’s community his home. Established here since 2007, he quickly built a reputation as a player and composer. He has worked with jazz greats such as Gary Peacock, Ralph Alessi, Joey Baron and many others.  In 2014 he traveled to Senegal to immerse himself in the local music scene, using the experience towards a long-term process of bringing together West African rhythms with the modernistic harmonies of French composer Olivier Messiaen. This is representative of Verheyen’s cross-genre approach to music, something that has become a mainstay in his oeuvre. In January 2018 Verheyen released When the Birds Leave on Universal...

In January 2018 Verheyen released When the Birds Leave on Universal Music, with his quartet featuring Marc Copland, Drew Gress and Billy Hart.

More recently Verheyen completed two new commissioned works, one for string quintet and saxophone (partly inspired by a residency at the cultural center Thread in Senegal); and a composition for string trio, piano and saxophone (featuring pianist Marc Copland and the Goeyvaerts String trio) that premièred at the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp where Verheyen has been visiting Artist in Residence since 2017.

In 2019 Verheyen released the album MiXMONK on his Universal contract with the co-op trio with Joey Baron and Bram De Looze which was followed by their second album On The Loose (Curatores/L’autre Distribution) in 2022.

In 2021 he released The Bach Riddles, a quartet reworking of Bach’s Musical Offering (WERF Records). In 2023 his solo soprano saxophone album Playing the Room was released and later this year a recording of the commissioned work for the KMSKA will also be published.

De Looze plays with internationally renowned musicians such as Joey Baron (MiXMONK – Baron / De Looze / Verheyen), Stéphane Galland (The Mystery of KEM feat. Ravichandra Kulur) and with multiple improvisation ensembles. These collaborations have taken him throughout the world to perform at cultural institutions, music venues and celebrated festivals. Recently De Looze felt the urge for a new collaboration called Vice Versa with two great artists who are natural extensions of his world of sound: New York master drummer Eric McPherson (Jackie Mclean, Andrew Hill, Pharaoh Sanders, Fred Hersch) and Berlin bassist Felix Henkelhausen (Jim Black, Nate Wooley, Lotte Anker). Their debut album Vice Versa (2023) was released on the Dutch label DOX Records.
His solo career took off with Piano e Forte (2016), a project for which he approached historical instruments from a contemporary perspective combined with the integration of non-equal tuning systems. His 2nd album, Switch The Stream (2018) indicated a renewed search for movement, evolution and introspection. Infusing the sound with a non-equal tuning stands out even more in his third solo chapter, Colour Talk (2020). It continues this trajectory with a continued attempt to renew from within.
In 2024, De Looze released his 4th solo album - with which he will be touring 'Down Under' (Australia/Korea/Japan/New-Zealand/...). And in 2025 a second album with his trio Vice Versa will come out.
