About the album

In Aeons, the colourful and multilayered musical world of Dutch composer Robin de Raaff unfolds across five works written between 1995 and 2021. Ideas of time, perspective and musical layering form a recurring thread throughout the album, while Renaissance polyphony, poetry, music theatre and visual art provide inspiration for music rich in contrast, movement and dramatic expression.

The title work Aeons draws inspiration from Van Gogh’s Les Chaumes de Cordeville, following the painting from the moment of its creation on a journey through time. Gradually, the boundaries of the musical ‘canvas’ are stretched and transformed. Together with Carmina Chromatico, the playful music theatre of An Introduction…, Piano Trio and De vlucht van de magiër, the album offers a fascinating portrait of De Raaff’s musical imagination spanning more than 25 years.

Osiris Trio

The Osiris Trio was formed in 1988. Since then, the trio has toured five continents and was twice given the honour to accompany Her Majesty The Queen of The Netherlands on an official state visit abroad. Over the past 19 years, the group has won a number of Dutch awards, including the ‘Philip Morris Finest Selection’ award and the Annie Bosboom Prijs. Since 2001 the Dutch Ministry of Culture supports the Osiris Trio. Since 2001 the Dutch Ministry of Culture supports the Osiris Trio. The trio’s discography encompasses two centuries of repertoire for piano trio but also includes song cycles and the highly regarded recording of Messiaens Quatuor “pour la fin du temps” that earned the highest rating (10 out of 10) in the Dutch music magazine Luister. The Dutch newspaper Het Parool concluded its review of a CD with recently written Dutch piano trios by stating “premium international quality.” Diversity typifies the trio’s repertoire, which ranges from Haydn’s oeuvre for piano trio to works by contemporary composers. The production of Klas Torstenssons’s “In großer Sehnsucht” even brought the trio on stage in a theatrical setting. The Dutch Society of Concert hall and Theatre Managers has nominated the Osiris Trio in the category “most impressive performances in chamber music”. Ellen Corver, Peter Brunt and Larissa Groeneveld hold teaching positions at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Recent tours were made to the United States, Hawai, Indonesia, Sweden, France, Ireland and Turkey.
In 2013 the Osiris Trio will celebrate its 25th anniversary; there will be two world premières of works by Klaas de Vries and Oene van Geel, especially written for this happy occasion.

Robin de Raaff

Robin de Raaff was born on December 5, 1968 in Breda, the Netherlands. He was raised in a very musical family where classical music and popular music were part of his daily life. As a child he received weekly piano lessons from his father and practised daily. De Raaff discovered his own musical world through playing the bass guitar, which he taught himself to play. As a teenager, under the explosive influence of fretless bass guitar legend Jaco Pastorius, De Raaff switched to fretless bass guitar, introducing him to a new world of complex instrumental music, and ultimately Jazz. But even more passionately, already as a young teenager, composing his own music was his most important musical expression. Starting with pop...

Starting with pop songs, with ever increasing instrumental parts, larger symphonic proportions were soon imposed which inevitably lead him towards the great classical composers. Inspired by this newly discovered music De Raaff developed a musical style for symphony orchestra installing the necessity to compose in full score. After enrolling as a composition student at the Sweelinck Conservatory of Amsterdam, playing the bass guitar moved to the background, but his very broad musical interest would greatly influence his view on style in contemporary Classical music.
De Raaff first studied composition with Geert van Keulen and later with Theo Loevendie, with whom he graduated cum laude in 1997. In 1999 De Raaff had the special privilege of being invited to work as George Benjamin’s only composition student at the Royal College of Music in London where he also studied with Julian Anderson.
Since 2001 De Raaff has been a professor of composition and orchestration and an active faculty member at the Composition Department of the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music (Codarts)
