About the album

This release from The Carice Singers, conducted by George Parris, brings together the complete unaccompanied choral works of Michael Tippett (1905–1998), marking the ensemble's debut recording with Signum Classics. Composed across the first twenty-five years of Tippett's career, these works reveal a composer whose choral writing draws on Renaissance polyphony and English madrigal tradition while remaining distinctly his own — rhythmically inventive, harmonically adventurous, and full of vivid word-painting. Long under-explored despite Tippett's stature as a choral conductor, this music is presented here with fresh clarity, offering listeners a compelling overview of an important strand of twentieth-century British choral repertoire.

The Carice Singers

The Carice Singers, praised by The Times for its “poised professionalism and beautiful sound” (2024), is one of the most distinctive vocal ensembles in the UK, defined by its engaging approach to choral sound and trailblazing concert programmes. Established by George Parris in 2011 and naming itself after Elgar’s only child, the group curates projects involving British music (including Elgar and his contemporaries), European and especially Nordic-Baltic repertoire, alongside works by today’s composers including Arvo Pärt, Kaija Saariaho, Matthew Whittall and Soosan Lolavar. The choir is active in training the next generation of British choral composers at the Cheltenham Music Festival’s Composer Academy, the Three Choirs Festival’s New Voices Academy and Spitalfields Music.
