Hailing from Baoding, China, pianist Tianxu An (b. 1999) has rapidly emerged as a distinguished voice of his generation on the global stage. His international breakthrough arrived in 2019 at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition, where he was awarded Fourth Prize and a special prize for "courage and restraint." This achievement, the highest for a Chinese pianist at the competition in 24 years, immediately propelled him to worldwide attention and led to a critically acclaimed debut with The Philadelphia Orchestra that July.
An’s career encompasses concerto engagements, recital tours, and notable collaborations. He has performed as soloist with major orchestras including The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Tonkünstler Orchestra at Vienna’s Musikverein, and the China Philharmonic Orchestra, in addition to appearances with the China National Symphony Orchestra at significant state events. His dedicated recital work has featured extensive touring across China, with debut performances at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. Recent highlights include performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under Maestro Zubin Mehta at the NCPA in July 2025, and collaborating with pianist-composer Mikhail Pletnev at the Beijing Music Festival in October 2025 to present Pletnev’s double-piano concerto, Fantasia Elvetica.
His recorded work has received outstanding international recognition. His debut solo album on the Alpha Classics label, dedicated to works by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev, was met with widespread acclaim. Gramophone magazine highlighted his "innate affinity" with the composers and a "top-drawer account of Rachmaninov’s Chopin Variations,". A subsequent live recital album was released by NCPA Classics as part of their prestigious debut series for young musicians.
An's formative training includes a Bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music under Meng-Chieh Liu and a Master’s degree from The Juilliard School under Robert McDonald. He has also studied in masterclasses and privately with eminent pianists such as Mikhail Pletnev, Yefim Bronfman, Dang Thai Son, and Dmitri Alexeev. Combining performance with pedagogy, Tianxu An now serves as a faculty member in the Piano Department of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He is managed globally by Armstrong Music & Arts.
