There are moments in music when time seems to pause, and with Arcangelo Corelli’s music, I have experienced that enchanted stillness—where each note is not just heard but felt deeply. His music, elegant and radiant, is the gentle whisper of a bygone era, yet it breathes timeless warmth and light.

Corelli’s art is a delicate conversation between violin and continuo, a living breath of harmony and counterpoint that dances with noble grace. Each phrase unfolds like a tender story, where voices seek, answer, and embrace one another—like cherished friends sharing secrets across the ages. It was through my mentor, Ryo Terakado, and his luminous recording of the Violin Sonatas, Op. 5 that I first stepped into this radiant world. Since then, Corelli’s melodies have been a constant companion—like a soft glow in the twilight, a source of inspiration and solace.

Corelli’s influence extends far beyond my own story. His style shaped the musical language of generations—admired openly by François Couperin, absorbed deeply into the work of Jean-Marie Leclair, and echoed, even centuries later, by virtuosi such as Pablo Sarasate and Niccolò Paganini.

His music is both spiritual and earthly—a beacon of simplicity and profound beauty.

Ryo Terakado (violin)

Ryo Terakado was born in 1961 in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. He started to play violin at the age of 4, and won 2nd prize in the All Japan Youth Musical Competition when he was 14. Ryo studied violin, chamber music and conducting at the Toho Gakuen School of Music. In 1983, he took third prize in the All Japan Music Competition. Upon graduating from Toho Gakuen, he was invited to become concertmaster of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for two years. Meanwhile, Ryo’s interest in Baroque music had been developing for some time: at the age of 19, he started to teach himself Baroque violin, and in 1985, he moved to the Netherlands to study the instrument at...

Meanwhile, Ryo’s interest in Baroque music had been developing for some time: at the age of 19, he started to teach himself Baroque violin, and in 1985, he moved to the Netherlands to study the instrument at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague under the guidance of Sigiswald Kuijken, receiving a soloist diploma in 1989.
Since 1987, he has performed as concertmaster with Baroque orchestras in Europe and Japan including La Petite Bande, Les Arts Florissants, La Chapelle Royale, Collegium Vocale Gent, and Tokyo Bach Mozart Orchestra; he made regular appearances with these orchestras to perform the concertos of composers including Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart. Ryo is also the current concertmaster of Bach Collegium Japan, and is invited frequently to Italy, Poland, France and Australia as a soloist. Since 1994, he has been one of the featured artists in the Hokutopia International Music Festival in Tokyo, where he made his debut as a conductor. His repertoire as a conductor includes operas by Monteverdi, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, Haydn and Mozart.
Ryo is a faculty member of the Hague Royal Conservatory (Holland), The Royal Conservatory in Brussels and his alma mater, Toho Gakuen School of Music (Japan). He teaches regularly at Yonsei University in Seoul and makes concert appearances in Korea.
His discography can be found on the Ricercar (Belgium), Accent (Germany) BIS (Sweden) and Denon (Japan) labels.

Eun-Shik Kim (violin)

EUNSHIK KIM is a distinguished baroque violinist and artistic director, deeply inspired by faith and the transcendent power of music. Believing that music is a divine gift, she seeks to bring spiritual depth and historical authenticity to her performances. Her journey in historically informed performance (HIP) has led her to renowned stages, where she collaborates with leading musicians and ensembles worldwide, striving to bridge the past and present through the timeless beauty of baroque music.
Eun-Shik Kim performs actively across Europe and Asia. A graduate of Seoul National University (B.M.) and Yale University (M.M. in Modern Violin), she pursued her passion for early music at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and earned her Artist Diploma under the guidance of Ryo Terakado. She has performed across Europe with leading figures in Baroque music including Christophe Coin, Jan de Winne, Lorenzo Ghielmi, Olga Pashchenko and as a soloist with Orchestra Barocca FIMA (Italy), Hibiki String Orchestra (Japan), the Korean Symphony Orchestra, and the complete Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at the Seoul Arts Centre. Eun-Shik actively performs throughout Europe at festivals such as the Early music festival in Utrecht, Urbino, Bruges, Beaune, La Chaise - Dieu and in Japan, China, and Hong Kong. In Korea, Eun-Shik is the director of Woolim & Peojim, leader of Alte Musik Seoul, and serves as the Artistic Director of the Early Music Series at Seocho Cultural Foundation.

François Couperin

François Couperin was a French composer. He is the most imporant and best known member of the Couperin family, which consisted of a whole dynasty of composers. Couperin was nicknamed 'Le Grand' (the Great), and is considered to be one of the most seminal composers of the Baroque period, especially in regard to his music for harpsichord. His keyboard music is characterised by a strong idiomatic nature, both in its personal style and in its close relation to the instrument's features. Next to his harpsichord music, Couperin composed music for organ, vocal music, both sacred and secular, and chamber music. Moreover, he published several theoretical treatises on the playing techniques on the harpsichord and its role in the accompaniment of music.

Arcangelo Corelli

The Italian composer and violinist Arcangelo Corelli was the first European composer who was recognized for his instrumental works, and was also the one who established genres such as the sonata and the concerto grosso. His works were of major importance for the development of chamber music and orchestral music. Composers such as Vivaldi, Geminiani and Telemann revised Corelli’s works or imitated his style. The virtuosic style of playing that Corelli taught to his pupils was of vital importance for the development of violin playing, and formed the foundation of the violin technique until the 19th century.
Although Corelli was famous during his lifetime, only little is known about his life. The available information consists primarily of a wealth of legends and anecdotes for which no reliable evidence can be found. It is known that Corelli studied in Bologna, and worked in Rome around 1675, where he played in various ensembles, led the orchestras of his patrons and performed as a soloist at the house concerts of the aristocracy.
Corelli’s oeuvre comprises solely of instrumental works, amongst them concerti grossi, chamber sonatas and church sonatas, published in sets of twelve. Currently his compositions are not as popular as during his lifetime, but there are still some works that are loved by the audience, like the so-called Christmas Concerto from his 12 Concerti Grossi op.6.
