"As for the performances, both Terakado and Bonizzoni are certainly adept at providing an interesting and quite sensitive renditions. The lively portions are all taken at a pace that brings out the nuances of Bach's lines, while the slow movements are sedate and reflective. The harpsichord itself is a Flemish model with a rich tone, sometimes verging on the sound of a fortepiano, and this is not disturbing in that it gives the keyboard parts a certain nice depth. This is a good recording and should rise to the top of the others of Bach's violin sonatas out there. "

Fabio Bonizzoni: Performing the complete sonatas for violin and harpsichord is like embarking on a long hike; heavy, difficult, sometimes dangerous. Playing them is not an activity for lazy people: you need to enjoy making an effort. As in the mountains on difficult terrain, every step needs concentration, good balance, the ability to sense danger, to foresee the unstable stone. The complete cycle is like a long hike; one that leaves your legs tired and maybe painful the next day but at the same time one that enriches your eyes and soul with the beauty of ever-changing landscapes. It is like starting from a valley on soft grass and starting to ascend slowly, step by step, reaching the woods, seeing the type of trees changing. Eventually the forest is left behind and we are again on the grass, but more sparse now, and the first rocks are looming closer and closer. The snow is not far away either… There is not a moment or a view that is not memorable, that will not leave a significant imprint in our memory; a gem, a hidden flower, an unexpected harmony, a daring counterpoint, a melancholic melody. And as one does not need to be a geologist or a botanist to be moved by the beauties of the mountains, similarly one does not need to be a musician to listen passionately to these sonatas.

Sie zu spielen ist nichts für faule Menschen: man muss sich gerne anstrengen. Wie in den Bergen in schwierigem Gelände braucht man bei jedem Schritt Konzentration, ein gutes Gleichgewicht, die Fähigkeit, Gefahren zu spüren, den instabilen Stein vorauszusehen. Der gesamte Zyklus ist wie eine lange Marschroute; eine, die die Beine müde macht und vielleicht am nächsten Tag schmerzt, aber gleichzeitig eine, die Augen und Seele mit der Schönheit der sich ständig verändernden Landschaften bereichert. Es ist, als würde man in einem Tal auf weichem Gras beginnen und langsam, Schritt für Schritt, aufsteigen, bis man den Wald erreicht und sieht, wie sich die Art der Bäume verändert. Schließlich lässt man den Wald hinter sich und befindet sich wieder auf einer Wiese, die jetzt aber karger ist, und die ersten Felsen kommen immer näher. Auch der Schnee ist nicht mehr weit entfernt... Es gibt keinen Moment, keinen Ausblick, der nicht in Erinnerung bleibt, der nicht einen bedeutenden Eindruck in unserem Gedächtnis hinterlässt; ein Juwel, eine versteckte Blume, eine unerwartete Harmonie, ein gewagter Kontrapunkt, eine melancholische Melodie. Ryo Terakado (violin)

Ryo Terakado was born in 1961 in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. He started to play violin at the age of 4, and won 2nd prize in the All Japan Youth Musical Competition when he was 14. Ryo studied violin, chamber music and conducting at the Toho Gakuen School of Music. In 1983, he took third prize in the All Japan Music Competition. Upon graduating from Toho Gakuen, he was invited to become concertmaster of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for two years. Meanwhile, Ryo’s interest in Baroque music had been developing for some time: at the age of 19, he started to teach himself Baroque violin, and in 1985, he moved to the Netherlands to study the instrument at...

Meanwhile, Ryo’s interest in Baroque music had been developing for some time: at the age of 19, he started to teach himself Baroque violin, and in 1985, he moved to the Netherlands to study the instrument at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague under the guidance of Sigiswald Kuijken, receiving a soloist diploma in 1989.
Since 1987, he has performed as concertmaster with Baroque orchestras in Europe and Japan including La Petite Bande, Les Arts Florissants, La Chapelle Royale, Collegium Vocale Gent, and Tokyo Bach Mozart Orchestra; he made regular appearances with these orchestras to perform the concertos of composers including Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart. Ryo is also the current concertmaster of Bach Collegium Japan, and is invited frequently to Italy, Poland, France and Australia as a soloist. Since 1994, he has been one of the featured artists in the Hokutopia International Music Festival in Tokyo, where he made his debut as a conductor. His repertoire as a conductor includes operas by Monteverdi, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, Haydn and Mozart.
Ryo is a faculty member of the Hague Royal Conservatory (Holland), The Royal Conservatory in Brussels and his alma mater, Toho Gakuen School of Music (Japan). He teaches regularly at Yonsei University in Seoul and makes concert appearances in Korea.

Fabio Bonizzoni is widely regarded as one of the foremost harpsichordists and organists of his generation, performing at some of the most prestigious venues and major European festivals, both as a soloist and with his orchestra La Risonanza, as well as guest conducting renowned Baroque and modern orchestras. In 2011, he conducted the Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala in the world premiere of the ballet,L’altro Casanova. At La Risonanza, Bonizzoni serves as the artistic and musical director, bringing his ideas to explore new repertoires and performance practices, and shaping the concert seasons in residence. His passion for teaching led him to develop the 'EDU' activities, which aim to train young people and integrate them into the concert world. From the start...

From the start of his career, after studying under the renowned Ton Koopman, Bonizzoni has been deeply involved in recording, producing numerous albums dedicated to the Italian keyboard repertoire. He later involved La Risonanza in this recording activity, creating unforgettable series such as the one dedicated to Handel's Italian cantatas, which not only earned him international recognition but also a Gramophone Award. As a soloist, he has delved into the great repertoire, recording works such as Scarlatti's sonatas, Frescobaldi's toccatas and partitas, Bach's Goldberg Variations, and the Art of Fugue.

In recent years, he has collaborated with the Challenge Classic record company to produce recordings of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, as well as two albums collecting Bach's concertos for harpsichord and orchestra. In a noteworthy collaboration with the accomplished violinist Ryo Terakado, he has undertaken the remarkable task of recording the complete set of sonatas for violin and obligato harpsichord by the legendary J.S. Bach. Their diligent efforts have culminated in the release of the second volume of this exquisite musical collection in March 2023.

The sound of their second Bach CD is worth listening to: Terakado's Milanese violin from 1690 and Bonizzoni's harpsichord by Kroesbergen are a match. Both also handle the notes thoughtfully and their interplay is excellent.
