“Mozart is the purest of all musicians; he is music itself,” affirmed Claude Debussy. And where, if not in Mozart’s works for keyboard, could we find a more fitting example of utter clarity and purity in music? His keyboard output was vast, particularly in view of his short lifespan.
The purity referred to by Debussy runs like a red thread through the selection of works by Mozart featured on this CD. Tender, exquisite melodies are what makes each one of these pieces so special. On the other hand, stunning virtuosity and any sort of grand gestures are kept in check.
If virtuosity makes an appearance now and then, it is only with the purpose of providing brief contrast with themes and motifs that are utterly simple, yet at the same time magnificent – as if the composer wanted to give these very themes a chance to display their full charm...."
Music historians long presumed that Mozart had written his Sonata No. 13 in B Flat Major K. 333 in Vienna around 1785. However, musicologist Alan Tyson recently provided convincing proof that Mozart must already have composed it in 1783 in Linz. The sonata is written on different paper than he used in Vienna....
Like dark thoughts flowing over a bed of melancholy, the opening arpeggios in Mozart’s Fantasia in D Minor K. 397 (written between 1782 and 1785) lead through a series of brief sighing motifs to the main theme, which, in turn, will soon and often be interrupted by passages in a series of changing moods: at times heavy and despondent, at others nervous and agitated. ... „Musikgeschichtlich interessant sind die sechs Variationen über das Finalthema des Klarinettenquintetts, die gar nicht Mozart, sondern eine unbekannte Hand
über zehn Jahre nach seinem Tod komponiert hat – was lange verschwiegen wurde, unter kommerziellen Aspekten sicher eine sinnvolle Strategie.

Vor allem die lyrische fünfte Variation fällt aus dem Rahmen. Bashkirova interpretiert sie, als würde ein Kind mit weit aufgerissen Augen am Klavier sitzen und beim Spielen abdriften in völlig entrückte Welten. Im Gegensatz dazu perlt die Klaviersonate BDur KV 333 voller Substanz. Im Finalsatz soll Mozart angeblich die Fülle eines großen Klavierkonzerts imitiert haben, mit eigener Kadenz. Elena Bashkirova is a native of Moscow and a graduate of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where she studied with her father, celebrated pianist and teacher Dmitri Bashkirov. Elena Bashkirova intensely studies and performs Classical-Romantic repertoire as well as music of the 20th century; her musical creativity has been strongly influenced by working together with such artists as Pierre Boulez, Sergiu Celibidache, Christoph von Dohnanyi, and Michael Gielen. In 1998, Elena Bashkirova founded the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival, of which she is artistic director. Taking place every year in September, the festival has become one of the pillars of cultural life in Israel. Bashkirova’s Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival Ensemble carries the Festival’s artistry far beyond Israel’s borders by making appearances in renowned chamber music series in Berlin, Paris, London, Salzburg, Vienna, Buenos Aires, and Sao Paolo as well as at international summer festivals such as the Lucerne Festival, Verbier Festival, Rheingau Music Festival, George Enescu Festival (Bucharest), and the Beethovenfest in Bonn.
In 2018, Elena Bashkirova was the recipient of the annual Ruhr Piano Festival Prize and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Ben Gurion University of the Negev.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose actual name is Joannes Chrysotomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, was a composer, pianist, violinist and conductor from the classical period, born in Salzburg. Mozart was a child prodigy. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. Along with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven, Mozart is considered to be one of the most influential composers of all of music's history. Within the classical tradition, he was able to develop new musical concepts which left an everlasting impression on all the composers that came after him. Together with Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven he is part of the First Viennese School. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. From 1763 he traveled with his family through all of Europe for three years and from 1769 he traveled to Italy and France with his father Leopold after which he took residence in Paris. On July 3rd, 1778, his mother passed away and after a short stay in Munich with the Weber family, his father urged him to return to Salzburg, where he was once again hired by the Bishop. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death.
