About the album

Reflections on the Well-Tempered Clavier

Hailed by Hans von Bülow as the “Old Testament” of music history, the Well-Tempered Clavier has been the object of a substantial amount of publications and research over the past three centuries. A detailed analysis would surpass the limits of a CD booklet and could not do justice to the work’s complexity: readers will thus excuse me for limiting myself to a few personal remarks.

The Well-Tempered Clavier from a current perspective

We are now in the year 2022: as chance would have it, this CD’s release coincides with the 300th anniversary of the first volume of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Our lifestyle has changed in many ways over the past three centuries. We travel at much greater speed; we develop an increasing number of technologies and digital means of communication. Trained specialists are responsible for every area of our lives. But have we truly made progress?

Excessive global travel, as we know, has an alarming impact on climate. While many areas of our life become digital, communication is made simpler but ultimately only leads to mental lethargy, social isolation, and emotional impoverishment.

Specialists turn out to be one-track minds who accumulate isolated bits of knowledge – indeed, as ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus remarked, “knowing many things doesn’t teach insight.” Insight thus not only requires for us to have knowledge, but also for us to broaden our horizons. And that is exactly what is so fascinating about the Well-Tempered Clavier.

It is one of those works that are not only capable of transmitting a great deal of knowledge, but also of revealing profound insight into the essence of music and mankind. Hardly any other composer ever combined so many heterogeneous elements and related them to one another. Bach’s view of the world was all-encompassing: thus, with the Well-Tempered Clavier, we not only embark on a journey through all 24 keys, but also spanning every facet of human existence….. ……... (from the booklet notes by Schaghajegh Nosrati)

Schaghajegh Nosrati (piano)

Born in Bochum in 1989, Schaghajegh Nosrati is highly regarded as a versatile musician. Due to her excellent reputation as an interpreter of Bach’s music, she was able to establish herself as a concert pianist at a young age. Her international breakthrough came through increasing musical collaboration with Sir András Schiff, who has praised the “astonishing clarity, purity, and maturity” of her musical approach, particularly reflected in her renditions of Bach. After many years of working with Rainer Maria Klaas, Schaghajegh Nosrati studied under the guidance of Einar Steen-Nökleberg, Christopher Oakden, and Ewa Kupiec at the Hanover University of Music, Drama, and Media, where she obtained her Artist Diploma (Konzertexamen). She completed a further artist diploma degree in 2020 as a student of Sir András Schiff at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin, and received further valuable artistic counsel from Robert Levin, Murray Perahia, and Daniel Barenboim.
From 2014 to 2021 she made guest appearances at major music venues including the Konzerthaus Berlin, Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, the Tonhalle in Zurich, Vancouver Playhouse, 92Y New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington D. C., Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, and the Philharmonie in Berlin. In 2017 she went on tour for the first time to China, where she gave acclaimed début performances in Beijing and Shanghai.
Stepping in for Radu Lupu, she gave her début performance at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin in 2019; a further highlight in her career was the joint tour with Sir András Schiff and his Cappella Andrea Barca Chamber Orchestra in 2018 with performances of Bach’s concertos for two keyboards at venues including the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Vienna Musikverein, Düsseldorf Tonhalle and the KKL Lucerne.
Her first two CDs were released on the label Genuin: Bach’s Art of Fugue (2015) and Bach’s keyboard concertos BWV 1052-1054 with the Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin (2017). Her third CD was released in October 2019 on the CAvi-music label label as a coproduction with Deutschlandfunk Kultur: it features a selection of solo piano works by French composer Charles Valentin Alkan, including Concerto pour piano seul. Her first recording with orchestra appeared on the CPO label: Piano concertos by Anton Rubinstein, together with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin.
Back to J.S. Bach, the young pianist recorded the Six Paritas BWV 825-830 as a coproduction with Radio Bremen (CAvi-music).
Parallel to her performance activities, Schaghajegh Nosrati engaged herself in the area of music education very early on. From 2015 to 2019 she taught piano at the Hanover University of Music, Drama, and Media; since 2020 she has been the assistant of Sir András Schiff at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin.

Composer(s)

Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He enriched established German styles through his skill in counterpoint, harmonic and motivic organisation, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms, and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France. Bach's compositions include the Brandenburg Concertos, the Goldberg Variations, the Mass in B minor, two Passions, and hundreds of cantatas. His music is revered for its technical command, artistic beauty, and intellectual depth.  Bach's abilities as an organist were highly respected during his lifetime, although he was not widely recognised as a great composer until a revival of interest in and performances of his music in the first half of the 19th century. He is now generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time.
