About the album

Five brilliant and focused musicians who against odds imposed by history and impossibility, have risen to the occasion to create a recording that provides depth, joy and emotional outreach in times of isolation and hardship. Developing their musical voices on the Seattle jazz scene, bassist Ben Feldman and saxophonist Santosh Sharma moved to New York for school and opportunity, while drummer Xavier Lecouturier, pianist Dylan Hayes and guitarist Martin Budde became invaluable creatives in Northwest music circles. Sidelined from various tours in 2020, the five ended up gathering in Alaska, learning to fly planes, composing, playing, and discovering that as a quintet, the joy of music and creation was rekindled, the weight of the moment lifted. Setting up in an airplane hangar, the quintet live-streamed performances through the summer and with their new compositions in tow, self-recorded and produced "Second Wave." The commonality of language acquired through hours of musical conversation between this group of friends quickly rose to fruition, producing sublime results for the listener.

Xavier Lecouturier (drums)

A young and vital member of the Seattle jazz scene, drummer Xavier Lecouturier discovered a circle of like-minded and talented colleages after arriving in town from the Bay-Area. 'Carrier' documents a collection of the original works they've been performing around the region over the last two years, as they looked for, and found, their voice. Featuring through-composed pieces drawing from numerous influences, this album encapsulates the sound, interplay, and collective compositional styles as they nudge boundaries, while staying rooted in a passionate study of the jazz tradition.

Martin Budde (guitar)

Martin Budde is a guitarist and composer/educator based in Seattle, WA. Growing up playing with family from a young age, he is partially self-taught and owes much of his musical development to his family, friends, and mentors such as bassists Chuck Deardorf and Marshall Hawkins. Martin has established himself over time as a reputable guitarist and composer in the Seattle area and on the West Coast where he performs regularly in a variety of groups. He co-founded the Seattle/New York-based contemporary jazz group Meridian Odyssey whose first release, Second Wave, was voted as one of the top 15 Seattle records of 2020 by The Seattle Times, and whose second full length album, Earthshine, was awarded the 2022 Golden Ear Award...

Jim Knapp studied trumpet and composition at the University of Illinois. In 1977, he began an eight-year stint as director of the Composers And Improvisors Orchestra. This band, which performed at clubs and festivals in the region and has recorded for Seabreeze and A-Records, drew its repertoire largely from Knapp's original compositions and arrangements. In the mid- and late 90s he could also be heard accompanying other artists, appearing, for example, with singer Jay Clayton. Knapp's next venture came in 1999 when he founded the Chamber Groove Orchestra, a large ensemble using regular big band instrumentation together with strings, voices and woodwinds. Knapp has also written music for theatre and dance companies. He is a skilled trumpeter although the chief focus of his talent appears to lie in his work as a composer and orchestrator of music of great lyrical beauty.
The Jim Knapp Orchestra is a 13 piece jazz ensemble that has achieved a unique and original sound through the compositions and arrangements of Jim Knapp. The orchestra features many of the finest jazz soloists in the Northwest. The band has appeared at the Royal Room, Seattle Drum School, Tula's, The Earshot Jazz Festival, Cornish College of the Arts, The University of Washington, IAJE festival (Long Beach), Jazz Alley, The Seasons Performance Series (Yakima), Bumbershoot, Patti Summers' Jazz Club, About The Music, Jazzbones, The Medenbauer Center, Arts West, and the OK Hotel. In addition the band has appeared in collaboration with Lee Konitz, Jay Clayton, Julian Priester, Ingrid Jensen, John Wikan, Jovino Santos Neto, Whitney James, Courtney Cutchins, Johanna Kunin, Robin Holcomb, Kirk Nurock, Carla Bley and Steve Swallow. The orchestra has received the Earshot "Best Acoustic Jazz Group" and "Recording of the Year" awards and was on several lists of best recordings of 2003. Available CD's include "On Going Home" - Seabreeze Jazz (2078), "Things For Now" - A-Records (AL 73180) and Secular Breathing - Origin (82412).
