About the album

Simeon ten Holt was born in Bergen (The Netherlands) to painter Henri ten Holt en Catharina Maria Cox on the 24th of January 1923. After his initial studies in composition with Jacob van Domselaer he continued his education in 1949 at the École Normale de Musique de Paris with Arthus Honegger en Darius Milhaud. Ten Holt was not just a composer, as a writer he was published in the literary magazine “Raster”, performed regularly as a pianist and was seen as an integral part of the arts community in Bergen.

Concerts featuring Ten Holts music are often seen more as a total event where both the music and the public are engaged providing the experience where one piece to last hours. In his memoires Ten Holt stated “Also the concept of ‘the longer the better’ is a mistake if the tension between the two points in time is missing. It’s then nothing more than a pointless repetition of the same.” In the 1950’s Ten Holt composed “Bagatellen” and a number of pieces where his original concept of diagonal thought took form. This concept can be seen in works such as: Diagonaalmuziek (1956-1958), Diagonaalsuite (1957) and Diagonaalsonate (1959). Notable with these compositions is the use of complementary keys in a tritone relationship. This provided him the freedom to explore the juxtaposition of tonality and atonality.

Beginning in 1961 Ten Holt began to draw influence from serialism . Ten Holts’s composition method was interesting in it’s theoretical approach, a work was first conceived in it’s totality, similar to the formalism movement in the visual arts, and was then later translated to paper. In the 1970s Ten Holt abandoned this method and returned to composing at the piano It was in this period, after after years of work, his most popular composition Canto Ostinato was completed. Based on the same concept of repetition and tonality, in addition to Canto Ostinato, Ten Holt produced a number of extended piano works. He described these works in contrast to his earlier more formal works a mirror to his inner sole.
Canto Ostinato, van de Nederlandse componist Simeon ten Holt, uitgevoerd door het geweldige Noord Nederlands Orkest onder leiding van David Porcelijn. Dat alleen al is een genot om naar te luisteren. Maar de prachtige opnamekwaliteit van de twee cd’s, maakt de luisterervaring helemaal uniek.

Het minimalistische Canto Ostinato is toegankelijk, neemt je mee en blijft hangen. Velen zijn en worden nog steeds geïnspireerd door dit werk. De musici mogen handelen naar eigen inzicht, Ten Holt liet de uitvoeringsmogelijkheden vrij, waardoor zij zelf kunnen bepalen hoelang een bepaald deel duurt.

Concerten met de muziek van Ten Holt worden vaak gezien als een totaal evenement, waarbij zowel muziek als publiek betrokken zijn en een stuk soms wel uren kan duren. In zijn memoires stelde Ten Holt: "Ook het concept van 'hoe langer hoe beter' is een vergissing wanneer de spanning tussen twee delen ontbreekt. Het is dan niets meer dan een zinloze herhaling van het eerdere deel".

Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012) werd geboren in Bergen. Na zijn eerste compositiestudie bij Jacob van Domselaer vervolgde hij zijn opleiding in 1949 aan de École Normale de Musique de Paris. Ten Holt was componist, maar ook schrijver en hij trad regelmatig op als pianist. In 1968 richtte Ten Holt de Werkgroep Bergen Hedendaagse Muziek op, waarvoor hij concerten organiseerde die volledig waren toegewijd aan hedendaagse muziek.

Ten Holts aanzienlijke oeuvre is te verdelen over drie perioden. Tijdens de eerste periode, in de jaren vijftig van de 20ste eeuw, ontwikkelde hij zijn eigen methode om zich te verzoenen met de concepten van tonaliteit en atonalitet, in reactie op de tonale invloed van Van Domselaer. In zijn tweede periode, in de zestiger jaren, raakte hij onder de invloed van het serialisme, en componeerde hij ook een aantal elektronische werken. In de derde periode, de jaren zeventig, keerde Ten Holt terug naar de piano, het instrument waarmee zijn carrière als componist begon. Na jarenlange arbeid voltooide hij zijn belangrijkste compositie uit deze periode, Canto Ostinato, werd een groot succes. Vervolgens componeerde hij een aantal uitgebreide pianowerken, gebaseerd op hetzelfde concept van herhaling en tonaliteit. Hij beschreef deze werken, in tegenstelling tot zijn eerdere meer formele werken, als een spiegel van zijn innerlijke ziel.

Het veelzijdige Noord Nederlands Orkest (NNO) bestaat uit zo’n 75 vaste orkestleden van verschillende nationaliteiten en is gevestigd in Groningen. De programmering van het orkest is verrassend, eigenzinnig en breed. Het NNO laat graag ‘nieuwe oren’ kennismaken met symfonische muziek en wil zo - als Nederlands oudste professionele symfonieorkest - een eeuwenoude traditie levend houden.

Nach ersten Kompositionsstudien bei Jacob van Domselaer setzte er 1949 seine Ausbildung an der École Normale de Musique de Paris bei Arthus Honegger und Darius Milhaud fort. Ten Holt war nicht nur Komponist, als Schriftsteller wurde er in der Literaturzeitschrift "Raster" veröffentlicht, trat regelmäßig als Pianist auf und galt als fester Bestandteil der Kunstszene in Bergen.
Konzerte mit Ten-Holt-Musik werden oft eher als ein Gesamtereignis gesehen, bei dem sowohl die Musik als auch das Publikum involviert sind. In seinen Memoiren stellte Ten Holt fest: "Auch das Konzept 'je länger desto besser' ist ein Fehler, wenn die Spannung zwischen den beiden Zeitpunkten fehlt. Es ist dann nichts weiter als eine sinnlose Wiederholung desselben". In den 1950er Jahren komponierte Ten Holt "Bagatellen" und eine Reihe von Stücken, in denen sein ursprüngliches Konzept des diagonalen Denkens Gestalt annahm. Dieses Konzept lässt sich in Werken wie Diagonaalmuziek (1956-1958), Diagonaalsuite (1957) und Diagonaalsonate (1959). Bemerkenswert bei diesen Kompositionen ist die Verwendung von komplementären Tonarten in einer Tritonusbeziehung. Dies gab ihm die Freiheit, die Gegenüberstellung von Tonalität und Atonalität zu erforschen.
Ab 1961 begann Ten Holt, sich vom Serialismus beeinflussen zu lassen. Die Kompositionsmethode von Ten Holt war in ihrer theoretischen Herangehensweise interessant, ein Werk wurde zunächst in seiner Gesamtheit konzipiert, ähnlich der Formalismusbewegung in der bildenden Kunst, und wurde dann später zu Papier gebracht. In den 1970er Jahren gab Ten Holt diese Methode auf und kehrte zum Komponieren am Klavier zurück. In dieser Zeit wurde nach jahrelanger Arbeit seine populärste Komposition Canto Ostinato fertiggestellt. Auf der Grundlage desselben Konzepts von Wiederholung und Tonalität schuf Ten Holt neben Canto Ostinato eine Reihe von erweiterten Klavierwerken. Er beschrieb diese Werke im Gegensatz zu seinen früheren eher formalen Werken als Spiegel seines Inneren.

The orchestras mission is to keep the tradition alive by presenting the symphonic repertoire in exciting curated programs performed at the highest level. Their philosophy is based on the belief that the secret to an intense musical experience in a live setting is the interaction between performers and the public. The orchestra also focuses regularly on modern day repertoire. For this reason the orchestra has played host to composers such as Terry Riley, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson en Steve Vai, all who have made their way to Groningen for performances of their own music.
In addition the NNO has introduced the public to many exceptional conductors and soloists. Next to conductors such as Viktor Liberman, Jean Fournet, Han-Na Chang, Stefan Vladar, Alexander Vedernikov and Susanna Mälkki, the orchestra has also featured soloists including Diana Damrau, Piotr Beczala, Eva-Maria Westbroek, Vadim Repin, Nemanja Radulović, Shlomo Mintz, Severin von Eckardstein, Louis Lortie and Alexander Gavrylyuk. Currently Antony Hermus is permanent guest conductor of the orchestra.

David Porcelijn (conductor)

Conductor David Porcelijn studied Flute, Composition and Orchestra Direction at the Conservatorium in The Hague. In addition he specialised  in the early music performance with focus on the Baroque and Classical periods. After graduating he received a scholarship to further his studies  in Genève. He spent a number of years in Australia as chief conductor of both the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he also held the same post with the Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester in Denmark and the RTB-Symfonieorkest in Belgrade and as musical director and conductor at the Netherlands Dance Theater. He has regularly premièred new works at prominent music festivals across the globe and has overseen the recording of new works by such composer as Jan...

He subsequently wrote more piano pieces that are based on the same ideas of repetition and tonality, such as Lemniscaat (1983), Horizon (1985) and Méandres (1999).
Ten Holt passed away in 2012.
