Bass-baritone Stephan Loges is accompanied by Iain Burnside in a collection that explores concepts of lost youth, the transience of life and the comforting presence of nature. The programme features performances of Schumann’s 12 Gedichte Op. 35 and Brahms’s 5 Lieder Op. 94, as well as in 5 rarely recorded works by Finnish composer Yrjö Kilpinen.

Born in Dresden, Stephan Loges was an early winner of the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition. He has given recitals throughout the world, including regular appearances at Wigmore Hall London and the Oxford Lieder Festival, as well as Carnegie Hall New York and many more.

Iain Burnside is a pianist who has appeared in recital with many of the world’s leading singers. He is also an insightful programmer with an instinct for the telling juxtaposition. Stephan Loges (bass-baritone)

He has given recitals throughout the world, including regular appearances at Wigmore Hall London and the Oxford Lieder Festival, as well as Carnegie Hall New York, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Vienna Konzerthaus, La Monnaie Brussels, Kuhmo Festival, Santiago de Compostela, BBC Radio 3 and the Vocal Arts Series in Washington with pianists Roger Vignoles, Graham Johnson, Eugene Asti, Simon Lepper, Alexander Schmalcz, Joseph Middleton, Sholto Kynoch and Iain Burnside.
Plans this season and beyond include returning to the Theater an der Wien to sing Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte with René Jacobs & Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Elijah at Gloucester Cathedral, Bernstein Songfest with Kristjan Järvi & MDR Sinfonieorchester at the Gewandhaus Leipzig, Bach Cantatas with Nuria Rial & Ensemble Capricornus im Burghof Lörrach, Bach Christmas Oratorio with Vladimir Jurowski and the LPO in London and Paris, as well as recitals at Wigmore Hall and the Oxford Lieder Festival.
Concerts have included Britten War Requiem with Melbourne and Sapporo Symphony Orchestras, Mozart Requiem with Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra and Bernard Labadie, Beethoven Symphony No 9 and Penderecki 3 Chinese Songs with the Ulster Orchestra, Kaija Saariaho The Tempest Songbook with the Scharoun Ensemble, Handel Messiah with San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the AAM and Richard Egarr, Telemann Brockes Passion with Raphaël Pichon and Ensemble Pygmalion, Mauregato in Schubert Alfonso und Estrella with Salzburg Mozarteum Orchester und Ivor Bolton, Mendelssohn Die erste Walpurgisnacht with Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Firenze, Berlioz L’Enfance du Christ with Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Robin Ticciati, Haydn Creation with Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Kammerakademie Potsdam, Haydn Jahreszeiten with Staatskapelle Dresden, Bruckner Requiem with Northern Sinfonia, and regular appearances with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
Stephan has sung Bach Cantatas with Sir John Eliot Gardiner as part of the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage and the Passions with the Gabrieli Consort and Paul McCreesh (both recorded for DG). He made his Proms debut in 2002 in St Matthew Passion with Trevor Pinnock and his since sung it with many period and modern orchestras, most recently with the OAE and on a European tour with The Monteverdi Choir and Gardiner (recorded live on SDG).
Opera roles have included Begearss in Milhaud La mère coupable at Theater an der Wien, Golaud Pelléas et Mélisande with English Touring Opera, Bruno in Macmillan Parthenogenesis for ROH Covent Garden, Moritz in Mernier Frühlings Erwachen at Opera National du Rhin, Wolfram Tannhäuser and Papageno Zauberflöte at La Monnaie, and Graf Capriccio in concert at the Edinburgh International Festival.
Stephan was a member of the Dresdner Kreuzchor before studying at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama London.

Robert Schumann

Robert Schumann was a German composer and influential music critic. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. Schumann left the study of law, intending to pursue a career as a virtuoso pianist. He had been assured by his teacher Friedrich Wieck that he could become the finest pianist in Europe, but a hand injury ended this dream. Schumann then focused his musical energies on composing.
Schumann's published compositions were written exclusively for the piano until 1840; he later composed works for piano and orchestra; many Lieder (songs for voice and piano); four symphonies; an opera; and other orchestral, choral, and chamber works. Works such as Carnaval, Symphonic Studies, Kinderszenen, Kreisleriana, and the Fantasie in C are among his most famous. His writings about music appeared mostly in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik (New Journal for Music), a Leipzig-based publication which he jointly founded.
In 1840, Schumann married Friedrich Wieck's daughter Clara, against the wishes of her father, following a long and acrimonious legal battle, which found in favour of Clara and Robert. Clara also composed music and had a considerable concert career as a pianist, the earnings from which, before her marriage, formed a substantial part of her father's fortune.
Schumann suffered from a mental disorder, first manifesting itself in 1833 as a severe melancholic depressive episode, which recurred several times alternating with phases of ‘exaltation’ and increasingly also delusional ideas of being poisoned or threatened with metallic items. After a suicide attempt in 1854, Schumann was admitted to a mental asylum, at his own request, in Endenich near Bonn. Diagnosed with "psychotic melancholia", Schumann died two years later in 1856 without having recovered from his mental illness.

Johannes Brahms

Johannes Brahms was a German composer and pianist. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, Brahms spent much of his professional life in Vienna, Austria. His reputation and status as a composer is such that he is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the "Three Bs" of music, a comment originally made by the nineteenth-century conductor Hans von Bülow.
Brahms composed for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, piano, organ, and voice and chorus. A virtuoso pianist, he premiered many of his own works. He worked with some of the leading performers of his time, including the pianist Clara Schumann and the violinist Joseph Joachim (the three were close friends). Many of his works have become staples of the modern concert repertoire. Brahms, an uncompromising perfectionist, destroyed some of his works and left others unpublished.
Brahms has been considered, by his contemporaries and by later writers, as both a traditionalist and an innovator. His music is firmly rooted in the structures and compositional techniques of the Classical masters. While many contemporaries found his music too academic, his contribution and craftsmanship have been admired by subsequent figures as diverse as Arnold Schoenberg and Edward Elgar. The diligent, highly constructed nature of Brahms's works was a starting point and an inspiration for a generation of composers. Within his meticulous structures is embedded, however, a highly romantic nature.

Yrjö Kilpinen

Yrjö Kilpinen was a Finnish composer whose works total over 800 solo songs to Finnish, Swedish, and German poems. In addition, he composed choral songs, chamber music, and works for solo piano. Kilpinen’s style is marked by clarity and austerity – sometimes very directly rugged – but at the same time extremely expressive. In Germany and England, Kilpinen achieved great success in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1948 he was named to the Academy of Finland representing musical composition. The title of Professor was awarded to him in 1942. During the Second World War, his success began to fade, although some of his songs, such as Laululle (to Song), Kesäyö (Summer Night), Tunturilaulu (Song of Fells), and Illalle (In the Evening),...
