"--- How everything organically develops out of itself and is carried on in the most amazing way, how Pilc lets a whole world of moods pass us by, how he holds out long arcs of tension and at the same time shows a wonderful sense for structure, that belongs to the great moments of jazz.  "

About the album

Most people believe that growing up and getting older goes hand in hand with acquiring more knowledge and wisdom. It may be comforting to think that life teaches you things, and there is often some truth to it. However, to me, there is also a parallel, deeper reality at work.

The more I know, the more I need to unlearn. The music in this album, made during two very different sessions, using the invisible ink of improvisation, is about this mysterious and ever growing part of unknown which makes me create, forget, and create again.
Jean-Michel Pilc

After listening to Jean-Michel’s solo piano recording, which he sent us from Montreal, Anne de Jong (at the time, general director of Challenge Records) and I discussed a new release. Jean-Michel had already planned to come over to Europe for concerts and masterclasses, so I suggested to arrange a studio recording session in The Netherlands. The result is Parallel, a double album of two solo piano recordings conceived in totally different time frames, at both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, which turned out to be a perfect match. The studio album is a series of Jean-Michel’s inventions based on composed repertoire. The Montreal album is improvised music, all recorded in just one take.

For me, solo piano music gets straight into the heart of a composition, in its purest form. Parallel is an intriguing and exciting journey in Jean-Michel’s realm of composed and improvised music, which makes you want to listen over and over again.
Jasper Somsen

George Gershwin

George Gershwin was an American composer, who is mostly known due to his combinations of classical and popular music genres. George Gershwin grew up in a poor neighbourhood in New York. His parents were Russian immigrants who had trouble making ends meet. They did, however, decide to purchase an old piano so Ira Gershwin could study to become a musician. Yet, it turned out not Ira, but his younger brother George showed remarkable talent. Ira applied himself to writing song lyrics and together the Gershwin brothers became absolute greats in the world of 20th century musicals. Nowadays, George's compositions are still relevant, as is evidenced by the many performances of his Rhapsody in Blue from 1924. But the best example is the ageless Summtertime,...

... Pilc experiments with tonalities and playing techniques, turns pieces over and over, creates a kind of Metajazz - a music philosopher, whom one likes to listen to while philosophizing. ...
Jazzthing, 27-8-2018

Before his hands touch the keys, his mind and his intuition have already cut off the redundant. This way, virtually every note is spot on.
De Limburger, 25-7-2018

The improvisations of Pilc strongly remind me of the memorable concert that Paul Bley gave at Brosella years ago and where, with his lengthy improvisations, he got everyone quiet. An absolute must have this double CD!
Rootstime, 24-7-2018

Remarkable double CD by Jean-Michel Pilc, who relies solely on the expressiveness and magic of his instrument…
Inmusic

Both CDs together result in a concentrated, brilliant statement on the possibilities of the jazz piano beyond the experiments of abstraction.
Stereoplay

Both CDs sound ingenious and unpredictable, because Pilc is a Master in "unlearning" routines. As a listener one expects each individual sound with tension.
Jazzthing

Catchy melodies alternate here with clusters and avant-garde excursions sometimes in seconds…
Jazzthetik

Pilc is in many pianistic saddles, processes the history of jazz in his music, refreshingly flashes classical nuances, improvises virtuously and is at the same time a soulful melancholiac.
Jazzpodium

The music presented on the double CD is a fascinating and exciting journey into Jean-Michel Pilc's realm of composed and improvised music, which really makes you want to hear it over and over again.
