About the album

Voce Chamber Choir’s new album is a moving tribute to Sir John Tavener, featuring a selection of works by him (many of which are previously unrecorded) and by Roxanna Panufnik. At the heart of the album is the premiere recording of Panufnik’s 99 Words to my Darling Children, a moving setting of Tavener’s last message to his family.

As well as the Voce Chamber Choir, the disc features performances from cellist Matthew Barley, organist James Sherlock and narration from Simon Russell Beale.

Voce is a dynamic London chamber choir founded by Suzi Digby and Harry Briggs in the summer of 2003. A diverse group of around 30 talented singers, we're well-known for our polished performances of challenging repertoire from across the musical spectrum; from major canonical works to traditional and popular music from around the world. Voce also regularly commissions and performs new works from the brightest rising stars on the choral music scene. Voce singers come from all walks of life. Among our ranks are professional musicians, teachers, students, nurses, civil servants, social workers, lawyers, arts administrators, priests... in fact, if the apocalypse happened during a concert, Voce would probably be able to rebuild civilisation from scratch. Suzi Digby (conductor)

Suzi Digby was born Japan and lived in Hong Kong, Mexico and the Philippines before settling in London en Cambridge. She is an internationally renowned choral conductor and music educator. She has trailblazed the revival of singing in UK schools and the community over two and a half decades. Suzi founded and runs the following influential arts/education organisations: The Voices Foundation (the UK’s leading Primary Music Education Charity); Voce Chamber Choir (one of London’s finest young Chamber Choirs); Vocal Futures (Nurturing young [16-22] audiences for classical music); Singing4Success (Leadership and "Accelerated Learning" for corporates); the London Youth Choir (a pyramid of 5 choirs, 8-22, serving all ethnic communities in London’s 33 boroughs); ORA (a professional vocal consort, commissioning international choral works as ‘reflections’ of Renaissance masterworks); and The Golden Bridge (one of the finest professional consorts in California, which commissions Californian composers to reflect masterpieces of the English ‘Golden’ Tudor Age and of the European Renaissance).
Suzi has conducted many major choral-orchestral works with, amongst others: BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players, The English Concert, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Brandenburg Festival Orchestra. Venues at which she has conducted include The Royal Albert Hall, St John’s Smith Square, the Gstaad Festival;,Ambika P3, London, St Martin in the Fields, St James’ Piccadilly, King’s College Chapel, Cambridge.
Suzi is the official choral conductor for the Rolling Stones and has fixed and coached 70 local choirs for 70 cities Internationally for their 50th Anniversary Tour.

Matthew Barley has created a unique international career full of improvisation, new music, cutting-edge computer technology, collaboration with jazz and Indian musicians, education, and arranging – but always with cello playing at the heart. He has played with some of the finest orchestras (Frankfurt Radio Symphony, BBC Philharmonic/Scottish, Czech Philharmonic), in some of the greatest concert halls, given premieres by major composers (MacMillan, Dusapin, Larcher) and appeared on tv and radio worldwide. He counts himself blessed to be able to dream up unusual projects and (usually) make them happen, and also pursue his own personal dreams of spending time with family and in nature. He lives in London with his wife, violinist Viktoria Mullova.

Sir John Kenneth Tavener was an English composer, known for his extensive output of religious works, including The Protecting Veil, Song for Athene and The Lamb. Tavener first came to prominence with his cantata The Whale, premiered in 1968. Then aged 24, he was described by The Guardian as 'the musical discovery of the year', while The Times said he was 'among the very best creative talents of his generation.' Tavener first came to prominence with his cantata The Whale, premiered in 1968. During his career he became one of the best known and popular composers of his generation, most particularly for The Protecting Veil, which as recorded by cellist Steven Isserlis became a bestselling album, and Song for Athene which was sung at the funeral of Princess Diana. The Lamb featured in the soundtrack for Paolo Sorrentino's film The Great Beauty. Tavener was knighted in 2000 for his services to music and won an Ivor Novello Award.

ROXANNA PANUFNIK b.1968 ARAM, GRSM(hons), LRAM studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music and, since then, has written a wide range of pieces – opera, ballet, music theatre, choral works, orchestral and chamber compositions, and music for film and television – which are performed all over the world.
