Through the medium of these works he revealed his deepest fears and sorrows, but also the beauty and integrity of his heart. The story of these ghosts culminates in tolling bells which are, in Cortot’s words, “of blood, of earthly pleasure, of death...” But what follows? A pause: silence, timeless solitude, in the Etude Op.10, No.6. Then, suddenly, the soul wakes up and waltzes into space. The album ends with the Scherzo No.2, “like a charnel house”, or house of the dead, as Chopin apparently described the opening – yet the finale sounds like a celebration of life. And so our ghostly journey ends with fireworks, with smiling and shining, looking far into the future...”
Chopins 'geesten' herleven in zijn muziek!
Pianiste Nino Gvetadze speelt op dit album pianomuziek van de Poolse componist Frédéric Chopin. En terwijl ze speelt lijkt het of ze de muziek vanonder haar vingers tevoorschijn tovert, zoals BBC Music Magazine het lyrisch omschrijft. Het NRC noemt haar "Een geboren pianiste die de kunst verstaat om zelfs tijdens de meest halsbrekende passages tot het hart te spreken." Ook Michel Dutrieue was onder de indruk van de kwaliteiten van Nino Gvetadze, getuige zijn recensie.
Nino Gvetadze zelf over Chopins muziek in deze opname: "Er komt een moment in het leven waarop we terugkijken, proberen de zin van het leven te ontdekken, en dan zien we onszelf in een ander daglicht. We worden achtervolgd door herinneringen en twijfels, die als geesten in onze hersenen rond wervelen. Ze vertellen ons over vergane hoop, liefde, bewondering, maar ook over eenzaamheid, pijn en wanhoop. We staan op de rand, kijken om, blikken terug op die momenten uit het verleden, en vragen ons af, wat als? En we realiseren ons: er is geen weg terug."
De 'ghosts' zijn de herinneringen van Chopin. Ook hij keek terug en vertelt ons in 24 Preludes zijn levensverhaal. In zijn muziek deelt hij zijn diepste angsten en smarten met ons, maar toont hij ook de schoonheid en betrouwbaarheid van zijn hart. Het verhaal van de geesten bereikt het hoogtepunt in een dramatisch 'requiem' in de Prelude in D mineur (dezelfde toonsoort als in Mozarts Requiem), waarin de begrafenisklokken weerklinken. Muziekcriticus Alfred Cortot, die iedere Prelude van een epitheton voorzag, noemde dit stuk "Of blood, of earthly pleasure, of death..."
Maar voor Gvetadze is dat niet het einde van het verhaal. Een pauze en dan volgt stilte, tijdloze eenzaamheid, in de Etude nr. 6, Opus 10. Dan plotsklaps kiest ze voor een spetterend einde met drie Walsen. De ziel ontwaakt en walst de ruimte in. Het album eindigt met de Scherzo No 2, dat klinkt als een knekelhuis, of huis van de dood, zoals Chopin blijkbaar de opening beschreef. Toch klinkt de finale als het vieren van het leven. En zo eindigt deze geestelijke reis met vuurwerk, een glimlach, vreugde en hoopvol ver de toekomst in kijkend, zo laat Gvetadze ons weten.
Geboren en opgegroeid in Tbilisi, in Georgië, verhuisde pianiste Nino Gvetadze na haar conservatoriumstudie naar Nederland. Ze heeft een drukke internationale carrière en wordt alom door critici geprezen om haar optredens. Ze won diverse prijzen en treedt regelmatig op als solist met grote orkesten zoals het Rotterdams Philharmonisch, Nederlands Philharmonisch en Residentie Orkest, en dirigenten als Michel Plasson, Yannick Nézet-Séguin en Jaap van Zweden. Sinds 2008 speelt ze in het Arosa Trio met haar collega's Frederieke Saeijs en Maja Bogdanovic. In augustus 2017 trad ze op tijdens het welbekende Prinsengrachtconcert in Amsterdam, samen met het Brodsky Quartet.

Born and raised in Tbilisi, Georgian pianist Nino Gvetadze leads an international career as a soloist and a chamber musician. Her performances have been praised by many critics throughout the Europe and Asia. Nino received various awards, the most important were the Second Prize, Press Prize and Audience Award at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition 2008. She became the winner of prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in 2010. Since 2019 Nino Gvetadze is the Artistic Leader of Naarden International Piano Festival.
Nino Gvetadze has performed with many outstanding conductors such as Michel Plasson, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Michel Tabachnik, John Axelrod and Jaap van Zweden and with orchestras such as the Rotterdam, Residentie-The Hague, Brussels, Espoo-Helsinki, Warsaw, Seoul and Netherlands Philharmonic, Bergische and the Rheinische Philharmonie, Münchner Symphoniker, amongst others. She toured with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Kammerakademie Potsdam, Camerata RCO and Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
Recent highlights are the performance of Ulvi Cemal Erkin’s piano concerto in Istanbul and the Variations on a nursery tune of Dohnány with the Liege Royal Philharmonic and chief conductor Gergely Madaras.
In recital Nino has performed all over the world, among other in Hannover (PRO MUSICA Preisträger amKlavier-Zyklus), Bayreuth, Herkulessaal and Prinzregententheater Munich, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, with Jean-Yves Thibaudet at the Spoleto Festival, Lucerne Piano Festival, Bunka-kaikan Hall Tokyo, Kuhrhaus Wiesbaden, the Festival Piano aux Jacobins (Toulouse), Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival (Finland). In the Netherlands Nino is a regular guest at Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven and Edesche Concertzaal. Since 2008 Nino plays in the "Arosa Trio" with her colleagues Frederieke Saeijs and Maja Bogdanovic.
Nino Gvetadze is a Challenge Classics artist. On her 2nd album “Visions” she presents piano pieces of the English composer Cyril Scott. Music journal “Pianist” wrote about her first CD “Ghosts” with the 24 Préludes of Chopin: ‘Gvetadze makes the listener - partly thanks to the wonderful recording - companion of the most intimate thoughts’. Repertoire that has been released on other labels: piano works by Mussorgsky (Brilliant Classics), Rachmaninoff Preludes op 23 and op 32 (Etcetera), “Debussy” with the Préludes book I, Estampes and Claire de Lune (Orchid) and “Widmung” with Liszt piano works (Orchid). The Debussy CD was editor’s choice of both International Record Review (April 2014).
In Tbilisi Nino studied with Veronika Tumanishvili, Nodar Gabunia and Nana Khubutia. After her graduation Nino moved to the Netherlands to study with Paul Komen and Jan Wijn. Nino plays on a Steinway Grand Piano, kindly lent to her by the Dutch National Music Instrument Foundation.
Frédéric Chopin is one of the greatest composers of the Romantic piano tradition. He was a master in making the small form great. His ballades, mazurkas, polonaises, preludes, etudes and nocturnes all belong to the most popular standard works for piano ever written.
As a child prodigy, Chopin grew up in a middle class family, who lived among the literati of Warsaw. When in 1830 the November Uprising broke out in Poland, the twenty year old Chopin stayed in Vienna. He became an exile and never returned to his mother country. He eventually settled in Paris.
He avoided public concerts, but he did like performing in small settings, such as salons and at home for his friends. This way, Chopin built a reputation as an exceptional pianist, teacher and composer.
Chopin brought a unique synthesis between the Viennese bravado and the French/English lyric style. Even though his pieces often are technically very demanding, the focus was always on creating a lyric expression and poetic atmosphere. He invented the instrumental ballade, and brought salongenres to a higher level with his many innovations and refinements.
