About the album

Achieving international recognition through his 40-year career as a bassist and as an award-winning producer, composer, and recording engineer, Dan Dean is a truly multi-faceted artist constantly seeking new challenges and outlets for expressing the music he hears. For his debut vocal recording, Dean came about it in a very roundabout way. In preparation for a recording of solo bass with string orchestra, Dean arranged works by JS Bach, Vivaldi, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakoff and Albinoni. With the budget and organizational constraints of recording large ensembles, Dean decided to try adapting the arrangements to his voice. What began as a “what if” experiment turned into a musically ambitious, technically challenging effort. Often angelic, or haunting, or exuberant, "Songs Without Words" is a culmination of his musical experiences over a lifetime, captured by a single microphone.

Durch seine 40-jährige Karriere als Bassist und als preisgekrönter Produzent, Komponist und Toningenieur ist Dan Dean ein international facettenreicher Künstler, der ständig neue Herausforderungen sucht, um die Musik hören zu können, die er hören möchte. Seine Debüt-Vokalaufnahmen kamen über Umwege zustande. Zur Vorbereitung auf eine Aufnahme von Solo-Bass mit Streichorchester arrangierte Dean Werke von JS Bach, Vivaldi, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakoff und Albinoni. Mit dem Budget und den organisatorischen Zwängen der Aufnahme großer Ensembles entschied sich Dean, die Arrangements an seine Stimme anzupassen. Was als "was wenn" Experiment begann, wurde zu einer musikalisch ehrgeizigen, technisch anspruchsvollen Dynamik. Truly a multi-talented artist, Dan Dean has achieved national and international recognition as a Bassist, Producer, Composer, and as an audio and recording Engineer. Dan has performed with the some of the finest musicians and musical organizations of our time, including: Shelly Manne, Howard Roberts, The Great Guitars (Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessell), Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, B.B. King, Eddie Harris, Blue Mitchell and Harold Land, Buddy DeFranco, Donny Hathaway, Tom Scott, Dave Grusin, Don Grusin, Ernestine Anderson, Bill (William O.) Smith, Ernie Watts, the Seattle Symphony, Walt Wagner, Seattle Opera, Freddie Hubbard, Bill Mays, Della Reese, Emil Richards/Joe Porcaro and many others. Dan has received numerous broadcast and film awards including the Cannes Golden Lion, Addy Awards, Telly Awards, Best of the West Awards, Clio Awards, IBA Awards, IBA "Spike" Award, NEA Composition Award recipient in Jazz Composition, One Show Silver Pencil, a Seattle Symphony Orchestra commission to compose "Piece for Electric Bass and Vibraphone", National Jazz Educators Award of Excellence, Rosie Awards and others. The Dan Dean Sample Libraries have thus far won 3 Keyboard Magazine's "Key Buy" awards, Electronic Musician Magazine's "Best Buy", and over the past year an a half have earned a total of 35 stars in Sound On Sound Magazine. Dan has been a major contributor to music education. He is the author of the widely successful Hal Leonard Series for Electric Bass Method Books 1, 2 and 3, Hal Leonard Electric Bass Studio Series Books 1, 2 and 3, Bass Trax and other related projects. He has been a member of the teaching faculties in Jazz studies and Electric Bass, of Western Washington University, Olympic College and Shoreline College. Dan received his B.A. in 1975 from the University of Washington where he majored in English Composition and Literature. He is also an FAA rated commercial pilot. Dan is also a member of several professional organizations. He is a member of ASCAP (as a Writer and Publisher), the Society of Composers and Lyricists, AES (Audio Engineering Society) and an AFM member.

Antonio Vivaldi

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher and cleric. Born in Venice, he is recognised as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe. He composed many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons. Many of his compositions were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi (who had been ordained as a Catholic priest) was employed from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740. Many of his compositions were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi (who had been ordained as a Catholic priest) was employed from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740. Vivaldi also had some success with expensive stagings of his operas in Venice, Mantua and Vienna. After meeting the Emperor Charles VI, Vivaldi moved to Vienna, hoping for preferment. However, the Emperor died soon after Vivaldi's arrival, and Vivaldi himself died less than a year later in poverty.

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was a Russian composer, one of the group known as 'The Five'. He was an innovator of Russian music in the romantic period. He strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity, often in deliberate defiance of the established conventions of Western music. Many of his works were inspired by Russian history, Russian folklore, and other nationalist themes. Such works include the opera Boris Godunov, the orchestral tone poem Night on Bald Mountain and the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition. For many years Mussorgsky's works were mainly known in versions revised or completed by other composers. Many of his most important compositions have posthumously come into their own in their original forms, and some of the original scores...

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was a Russian composer, and a member of the group of composers known as The Five. He was a master of orchestration. His best-known orchestral compositions— Capriccio Espagnol, the Russian Easter Festival Overture, and the symphonic suite Scheherazade — are staples of the classical music repertoire, along with suites and excerpts from some of his 15 operas. Scheherazade is an example of his frequent use of fairy tale and folk subjects.
Rimsky-Korsakov believed, as did fellow composer Mily Balakirev and critic Vladimir Stasov, in developing a nationalistic style of classical music. This style employed Russian folk song and lore along with exotic harmonic, melodic and rhythmic elements in a practice known as musical orientalism, and eschewed traditional Western compositional methods. However, Rimsky-Korsakov appreciated Western musical techniques after he became a professor of musical composition, harmony and orchestration at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1871. He undertook a rigorous three-year program of self-education and became a master of Western methods, incorporating them alongside the influences of Mikhail Glinka and fellow members of The Five. His techniques of composition and orchestration were further enriched by his exposure to the works of Richard Wagner.

Tomaso Albinoni

Albinoni studied violin and voice, but in the art of composing he was completely self-taught. He was born to a rich family, and he didn't have to work for the church (unlike his contemporaries such as Vivaldi, Zani and Geminiani), which gave him a lot of time and finances to work on his compositions from an early age. His first opera Zenobia, regina de Palmireni was performed in Venice for the first time in 1694. Even though he quickly grew to fame as a composer, little is known of Albinoni's life. He married in 1705, and the Kapellmeister of the St Mark's Basilica, his friend Antonio Biffi, was his best man at the wedding. Otherwise it seems he had little contact with the musical establishment of Venice, even though his operas were quite popular in the Italian cities. In 1722, Maximilian II of Bavaria invitied him to perform two of his operas in Munich. Around 1740, a collection of violin sonatas by Albinoni was published posthumously by a French editor. For a long time, people thought he had already died by then, but in reality he was living a secluded life in Venice, where he died at the age of 80 from diabetes.
