About the album

The ensemble Scaramuccia began in 2013, thanks to violinist Javier Lupiáñez's quest to rediscover the lesser-known baroque repertoire. Scaramuccia's purpose is to bring back to life the repertoire of which one could listen not only in the most refined circles, but also in the taverns and on the streets of the baroque past. Along with Vivaldi, this release features Prete Rosso's recently-rediscovered works. This recording is aiming to be part of the new history, featuring these recently discovered works.

Weltersteinspielung der Sonate für Violine RV 205/2 von Vivaldi, sowie die kürzlichen Neuentdeckung durch Javier Lupiáñez im Jahr 2015, RV 820. Eingespielt auf historischen Instrumenten von Javier Lupiáñez selbst und dem Ensemble Scaramuccia. Antonio Lucio Vivaldi ist unberstritten einer der bekanntesten Barock-Komponisten, wobei die (Wieder)Entdeckung des 'Prete Rosso' erst in den letzten Jahren vorangeschritten ist und wir somit durch solch fantastische Fünde immer noch überrascht werden können.

Viele dieser Entdeckungen kamen aus dem Dredner Schrank II der Universitätsbibliothek, einer Sammlung von Johann Georg Pisendel, Violinist am Dresdner Hof und Schüler und Freund Vivaldis. Da die Improvisation ein wesentlicher Bestandteil bei der Aufführung der Werke Vivaldis war, setzten sich Javier Lupiáñez und das Ensemble Scaramuccia für diese Einspielung noch einmal stark mit dieser Tradition auseinander.

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi è senza dubbio uno dei più noti compositori barocchi. Tuttavia, la riscoperta in tempi moderni del "Prete Rosso" ha avuto luogo poco tempo fa. La storia di questa riscoperta potrebbe ancora riservarci alcune sorprese, e questo CD fa parte di questa storia, con le sonate di Vivaldi per violino e basso continuo più recentemente scoperte, tra cui le opere più recente scoperta dal compositore veneziano (aggiunto alla RISM come RV 820 e RV 205/2), come individuate da Javier Lupiáñez nel 2015, e la presentazione della prima registrazione della RV 205/2.

La maggior parte di queste recenti scoperte hanno avuto luogo nella cosiddetta Schrank II (Cabinet II), biblioteca universitaria del land di Sassonia a Dresda. La musica dal Schrank II è parte della compilation che è stata raccolta da Johann Georg Pisendel, concertino dell'orchestra della Corte di Dresda, nonché allievo ed amico di Vivaldi.

La particolare cura sull'improvvisazione ed ornamentazione è solo un aspetto del profondo lavoro di ricerca dietro questa registrazione; gli stili di improvvisazione di Pisendel e Vivaldi sono stati studiati con cura e dedizione, facendo di questo CD un duplice scoperta: le nuove opere di un grande maestro ed il linguaggio musicale dei maestri che li hanno eseguiti.

Scaramuccia made their first appearances in Bruges Festival Fringe and Utrecht Festival in summer 2013, with a warm reception from both the audience and the organisers. Nowadays they have an intense concert schedule that includes the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy. Amongst other performances, Scaramuccia has played at the Maldon Festival of Arts (uk), the Muziekmuseum Vleeshuis (Belgium), the Kasteelconcerten concert series (the Netherlands) and the Echi Lontani Festival (Italy).

Their eagerness to discover new music led Scaramuccia to the privilege of claiming for the first time that Vivaldi was the author of the rv 820 and the rv 205/2. They also had the pleasure of performing both pieces in a world première which was broadcast by the program ‘De Musyck Kamer’ of Duch radio station Concertzender, in summer 2014.

Scaramuccia was awarded the Audience Prize in the Göttinger Reihe Historischer Musik 2015/2016 competition.

The spirit of Scaramuccia is that of bringing back to life the repertoire which one could listen not only in the most refined circles, but also in the taverns and on the streets of the baroque past. Behind each one of their programmes, there is an intense investigation project which makes it possible to rediscover these musical gems hidden amongst the vast amount of baroque music that is usually performed.

Born in Venice, he is recognised as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe. He composed many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons. Many of his compositions were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi (who had been ordained as a Catholic priest) was employed from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740. Many of his compositions were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi (who had been ordained as a Catholic priest) was employed from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740. Vivaldi also had some success with expensive stagings of his operas in Venice, Mantua and Vienna. After meeting the Emperor Charles VI, Vivaldi moved to Vienna, hoping for preferment. However, the Emperor died soon after Vivaldi's arrival, and Vivaldi himself died less than a year later in poverty.
