About the album

For this second album alto sax player Joris Posthumus travelled to Japan to tour and record with some great Japanese musicians. He met the band on a festival in 2011 while touring through China with the Dutch band State of Monc. A friendship stayed with Yuichiro Tokuda, also alto sax player and it was Yuichiro who asked him to coming tour in Japan and Korea in 2014. The lively jazz scene in Japan left Joris inspired to write new songs when he was back home. April 2015 Joris invited Yuichiro Tokuda to join him for a small club tour in Holland and Belgium to polish and fine tune the songs. Later that year the songs were recorded in Japan. The different approach between Japanese and Dutch jazz playing, more or less the neatly organised and mathematical versus flexible and four-four (times), were merged and all resulted in a bombing of speed and emotions.

Interkulturelle Beziehungen

Für sein zweites Album reiste der Saxophonist Joris Posthumus nach Japan, wo er mit einigen der besten Musiker Japans tourte und aufnahm, welche er 2011 bei einem Festival während einer Chinatour kennen lerne, als er mit der niederländischen Band State of Monc unterwegs war. Eine enge Freundschaft mit, dem ebenfalls Alt-Saxophonisten, Yuichiro Tokuda entstand hierbei, der ihn 2014 für eine Tour durch Japan und Korea einlud. Die lebendige Jazzszene in Japan inspirierte Joris dazu, neue Songs zu schreiben, als er wieder zu Hause war. Um diesen den letzten Feinschliff zu verpassen, lud er Yuichiro Tokuda im April 2015 ein, die Songs bei einer Tour durch Holland und Belgien gemeinsam weiter zu entwickeln, woraufhin sie diese in Japan aufnahmen.

Die unterschiedlichen Herangehensweisen in der japanischen und niederländischen Art Jazz zu spielen, die präzise organisierte mathematische gegen die flexible Vier-Viertel-Variante, wurden miteinander verschmolzen und münden in einer Explosion an Geschwindigkeit und Emotionen.

Joris joined the band Stat of Monc for a tour through China. On this tour he met Yuichiro Tokuda, a Japenese saxophonist who was also touring with his band in China. After this tour Joris and Yuichiro kept in touch and in 2014 Joris was invited for a tour in Japan and Korea, to join Yuichiro and his band. On this tour Joris had the opportunity to play with many different musicians and see a lot of the beautiful jazz venues in Japan. Back in the Netherlands he started composing new songs, inspired by his Japanese trip and musical encounters there. On this tour Joris had the opportunity to play with many different musicians and see a lot of the beautiful jazz venues in Japan.
Back in the Netherlands he started composing new songs, inspired by his Japanese trip and musical encounters there.
April 2015 Joris invited Yuichiro Tokuda to join him for a small club tour in Holland and Belgium. This was a good way to test out some of the new tunes.

The Plan After talking to Challenge Records International, the record company that released my cd 'The Abyss' the plan arose to go back to Japan in September 2015 to record a album.
Prior to the recordings the group did four concerts in Tokyo as preparation for the two recording days in the studio. In Japan Joris recorded a new album with sound engineer Neeraj Khajanchi @NK SOUND TOKYO. Mixing was done @studio Wedgeview by Udo Pannekeet and Pascal Vermeer. In 2009 Joris recorded the album ‘The Abyss’ together with: Sound technician Chris Weeda, pianist Jeroen van Vliet, drummer Pascal Vermeer and bass player Jurriaan Dekker (feat Tom Beek). This First album, ‘The Abyss’, was released by record company Challenge Records in 2010. This album presents dynamic jazz of a high NU-bop energetic quality. The biting alto saxophone of Joris , who whipped up by the strong rhythm section explores all corners of the improvisation spectrum, is characteristic for the sound of the Quartet. Making music is all about the chemistry between the musicians. With this group, Joris feels that all-important ‘click’. In this formation the band toured the Netherlands with the famous American tenor saxophonist David Murray as a guest. They played at the North Sea festival, but also on other famous Dutch Jazz venues during the Young VIPs tour, e.a. the Bimhuis in Amsterdam and LantarenVenster in Rotterdam. The album ‘The Abyss’ was received with a great deal of enthusiasm by the jazz scene, in the Netherlands as well as abroad.

Shunichi Yanagi (piano)

洗足学園音楽大学音楽学部器楽科ジャズ専攻を卒業。在学中にチックコリアの演奏に出会いジャズピアノに目覚める。卒業後は都内近郊を中心にジャンルを問わず、幅広く演奏活動を行なっている。近年ではクラシック音楽を自己の演奏、曲に取り入れ、より多くのスタイルが混じり合った、その独特の演奏に定評がある。2012年10月10日に自身初のリーダー作「bubble fish」が発売し、JZBratでのCD発売記念LIVEも成功させる。 2014年ヨルダンのAmman Jazz Festivalに徳田雄一郎率いるRALYZZDIGで出演し、大観衆のオーディエンスから好評を博す。 2015年自身二枚目となるリーダー作「slope」を4月に発売する。 2015年秋にオランダを代表するアルトサックス奏者、Joris Posthumusのレコーディングに参加。 2016年10/1から全世界で発売される予定。国際的に更なる幅広い活躍が期待されている。

Satoshi Tokuda (double bass)

幼いころより、建築などの空間に興味を持ち、10代半ばよりその要素である音響、音楽に没頭し始める。ヒップホップ、民族音楽、オルタナティブ、ハウスまで様々なジャンルに触れる中、ライブミュージックの即興性に強く関心を持つようになり、ギターを手に取る。大学在学中にコントラバスの独習を開始、徐々にジャズに傾倒する。小濱安浩グループにて演奏活動を開始。現在は、自己のプロジェクトmorphologyを始め、オランダのサックス奏者、ヨリス・ポスティムスとの日蘭プロジェクト、五十嵐一生(tp)Special Meeting、古地克成(ds)トリオなど、数多くのバンドやセッション、レコーディングに参加し、全国的に活動を展開。そのヴァーサタイルなスタイルで共演者の信頼を集めている。

Gaku Hasegawa (drums)

高校入学と同時にドラムを始める。1998年に甲陽音楽学院に入学し、この頃ジャズに目覚める。 2000年に渡米、奨学金を獲得してBerklee College of Musicに入学。在学中は主に Jon Hazilla氏、Joe Hunt氏に師事。2003年に同大学Professional Music Major Degreeを卒業。その後一時ニューヨークへ移動し、Gregory Hutchinsonにレッスンを受けるなど、米国での様々な経験を経て、2005年に日本国内へと活動の拠点を移す。帰国後は、東京を拠点として様々なライブやレコーディング、ツアー、全国各地のジャズフェスティバルに出演。共演ミュージシャンはジャンルを問わず多数。現在は主に、川嶋哲郎Quartet、徳田雄一郎RALYZZDIG、堀秀彰Trio、宅間善之Vibrasonic、中島明子Trio、飯田さつき、ポップスシーンではスウィングラップユニットSOFFetのサポートバンド(Tokyo Junkastic Band)に参加している。近年では、マレーシア、中国、カナダ、インド等の海外のジャズフェスティバルにも出演した。2012年度JazzPage人気投票ドラム部門第一位を獲得。プレイスタイルはジャズだけにとどまらず様々なジャンルを取り入れ、安定したリズムから繰り出される独特なアプローチや歌心溢れるドラミングには定評があり、様々なミュージックシーンで人気を博している。

Jacob Bedaux

His style is fresh and fast but still dreamy and very understandable. With his compositions he is able to completely silence the audience but also to make them move and take them to another space far away from their regular life. Jacob Bedaux started playing the piano at the age of three on his grandpa’s lap who was a classical concert pianist. Next to classical music his parents also played records of Miles Davis and other trumpeters which influenced him big time in his youth (Jacobs father was a trumpeter). After exploring all kinds of music he specialized in energetic modal kind of jazz with influences of classical and pop music. Next to classical music his parents also played records of Miles Davis and other trumpeters which influenced him big time in his youth (Jacobs father was a trumpeter). After exploring all kinds of music he specialized in energetic modal kind of jazz with influences of classical and pop music.

After finishing his school cum laude he started to work as a pianist, composer, arranger, conductor and teacher.
At this time he is considered one of the top jazz pianists in the Netherlands.

Since the beginning of 2016 he started his own quartet.

His first album, JACOB BEDAUX QUARTET ‘In Between Worlds’ will be released in 2017.

Music to me is about expressing myself without the need for words. Translating feelings into compositions and conveying this to the audience. When I’m playing my music everything around me disappears.

I hope to move people with my music, transfer the positive energy while the compositions linger in their minds, ascribing it their own thoughts and feelings.

To me a successful concert means the atmosphere changed from curious in the beginning to happy and satisfied at the end.

At a concert someone said: this is the first time my son was watching a concert completely mesmerized and said afterwards : “Dad, that was really cool”.
