About the album

Born and raised in the U.K. and based in Amsterdam, pianist/composer Dominic J Marshall proved with his first two recordings to be a prodigious and precocious talent, and now at 24, one well worth keeping an eye on. On Spirit Speech, Marshall's trio, with bassist Tobias Nijboer and drummer Jamie Peet, evades categorization, surging enigmatically through jazz, classical, hip-hop, soul, folk and everything in between, into a realm of expression that is uncompromisingly their own. "He brings together a great heritage of the past, but also something very fresh and new, all within the confines of a simple acoustic piano trio." - Jamie Cullum, BBC.

"You can hear, not only in his playing, but also in his composing, little bits of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, right up there to Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau. You can hear his classical influences - the tricksy mathematical compositions of Bach for example. But he's also definitely inspired by the rhythms and offbeat textures of hip-hop producers like J Dilla. He brings together a great heritage of the past, but also something very fresh and new, all the within the confines of a simple acoustic piano trio."

In April 2011 Dominic received The Countess of Munster Musical Trust Award for young British musicians of exceptional ability to finance the final year of his postgrad. After graduating Cum Laude in May 2012 with a 10, his second trio CD Icaros was released on the F-IRE Label ('...certainly on a par with any other piano trio I’ve heard this year, if not better. A five-star offering if ever there was one.' - JJ Wheeler). Icaros was awarded ‘Best International Jazz Album 2012’ by the highly-esteemed Japan-based blog TokyoJazzNotes. In March 2013 Dominic was awarded an Emerging Excellence award from Help Musicians UK to record Spirit Speech, his latest trio album. Then in summer he was selected unanimously by a jury of Jamie Cullum, Gilles Peterson and Jez Nelson to perform at 'BBC Introduces' at Band on the Wall, Manchester Jazz Festival. The live recording was broadcast in August for BBC Radio 3.
Released by Origin Records in Spring 2014, Spirit Speech has been called ‘an excellent, imaginative and distinctive album that repays repeated listens’ (LondonJazz) and ‘Already [in April] an undoubted jazz highlight of 2014. Masterful!’ (CultuurPodium). Based on that success his trio was selected to play at the Dutch Jazz Competition 2014, Dominic taking home the ‘Best soloist’ award. November 2014 saw Spirit Speech nominated for an Edison International Jazz award alongside Brad Mehldau & Mark Giuliana and Brian Blade Fellowship.
2015 has seen critically acclaimed trio shows at North Sea Jazz Festival, the Bimhuis, Pizza Express Jazz, the Southbank centre, Brighton Festival and the Vortex - the performance at North Sea Jazz Festival being broadcast live on national Dutch television channel NPO. On the strength of his growing reputation Dominic was invited to join British nu-jazz and electronic music group The Cinematic Orchestra, starting with a tour of the whole of Europe in November.
Parallel to his piano career, Dominic’s alter-ego 〄 DJM 〄 has built up a following outside the jazz-world with several albums of his self-produced beats, BExperimental blog declaring him 'a rare find who will be a formidable force in years to come.' His first cassette release Foreground Music (April 2014) was dubbed ‘highly engaging and highly listenable’ by Patient Sounds, with follow-up Cave Art now out and making waves on the notorious Paxico Records label (‘a one-of-a-kind-project’ - HipHop Speakeasy). A solo A-side release with New York’s Dirty Tapes is to be expected in autumn-winter 2015.

The pianist is at his best when he let himself carried away by the music.
Draai om je oren, 12-6-2014

Spirit Speech 'is not a CD for a listener who longs for peace, but from young and eager musicians who have so much to offer can not be expected to refrain. Their drift to play and the pleasure it gives them is contagious.

The Dominic J. Marschall Trio has its own energetic and authentic acousticsound and is a asset for the European jazz scene.

His imagination drives the music. And the ideas keep flowing. They make that you listen to this cd more as a whole than as a disc full of individual songs.
