About the album

For their self-titled second album, Dutch jazz trio Kapok went looking for a space that could provide the right acoustics for their unique sound. They ended up in 13th-century Beverweerd Castle, that once sheltered Napoleon and is now inhabited by ex-art forger Geert-Jan Jansen. He gave the band access to the entire castle, and after installing a mobile studio, Kapok recorded the album in two weeks, surrounded by hundreds of paintings.

In contrast to the spacious, dreamy quality of their debut album Flatlands, Kapok has become an energetic album filled with instrumental songs influenced by roots music, indie rock and free jazz. There is lots of room for improvisation, and the live experience gained by the band over the past two years is constantly in evidence.

Kapok is a young and unusual trio. The band combines elements from very different genres and traditions: the energy and compact form of pop and funk; the grooves and percussion of roots music; the interaction and abstract sounds of free improvisation; and the phrasing and harmonies of jazz.

Using all these elements, Kapok creates music that is new and recognisable at the same time, and keeps pulling the rug out from under the listener's feet.

De op het eerste gezicht vreemde combinatie van drums, gitaar en hoorn, pakt eigenlijk heel harmonieus uit. Dat is volledig de verdienste van degenen die de instrumenten bespelen. De basis wordt gelegd door gitarist Timon Koomen en drummer Remco Menting. Koomen speelt veel akkoorden en baslijnen, zodat er veel ruimte is voor hoornist Morris Kliphuis. Alle drie spelen partijen over en door elkaar, wat soms resulteert in kamerbrede harmonieen, soms in prettige chaos. Er blijft echter altijd genoeg lucht hoorbaar; ze zijn immers maar met z’n drieën. Kapok klinkt modern, mede doordat de mannen het gebruik van effecten (zoals een distortion of een echomachine) niet schuwen. Het is muziek die getrouwd is met de jazz, maar open en bloot flirt met pop, funk en rock. Voor de liefhebber van grenzeloos is Kapok een absolute aanrader. (HF)

Die Suche nach dem richtigen Aufnahme-Ort führte Kapok nach Beverweerd Castle, einem Schloss aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, das einst Napoleon Schutz bot. Sie installierten zwischen Hunderten von Malerein ein mobiles Studio und nahmen innerhalb von zwei Wochen das Album Kapok auf.

Im Gegensatz zu ihrem Debüt Flatlands, das vor allem durch seiner träumerischen Qualitäten überzeugte, ist Kapok nun ein energetisches Album geworden, mit Instrumentalsongs, die von Roots Music, Indie Rock und free Jazz beeinflusst wurden. Hier herrscht viel Raum für Improvisation, was die Live-Performances der Band beweisen.

Kapok ist ein junges und ungewöhnliches Trio. Die Band kombiniert Elemente aus verschiedenen Genres und Traditionen; Energie udn Form aus dem Pop und Funk; Groove und Perkussion aus der Roots Music; Interaktion und die Abstract Sounds der freien Improvisation; Phrasierung und Harmonies des Jazz.

All diese Elemente machen die Musik von Kapok zu etwas Neuem und Wiedererkennbaren zur selben Zeit, und reißt den Hörern dennoch den Boden unter den Füßen weg!

Their debut album Flatlands was widely praised by the Dutch press. The band played close to a hundred concerts since its release, and won the Dutch Jazz Competition in 2013 and the European Jazz Competition in 2013.
In January 2014 the band will release its second album, followed by an international tour.
