Acknowledged as the UK’s foremost musical pioneers, with an extraordinary recording legacy, the Philharmonia leads the field for its quality of playing. Together with its relationships with the most sought-after artists, most importantly its Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philharmonia Orchestra is at the heart of British musical life.

Esa-Pekka Salonen made his London conducting debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra in September 1983 and he has returned to conduct the Orchestra on a regular basis ever since. This is the first in our series of Philharmonia releases that feature Salonen as conductor.

In 1900 begon Schönberg aan een liederencyclus voor sopraan, tenor en piano, bedoeld voor een componeerwedstrijd. Een jaar later was dit begin uitgegroeid tot een indrukwekkende cantate voor vijf solisten, een verteller, drie mannenkoren, een achtstemmig gemengd koor, en een 150 musici tellend orkest, gebaseerd op gedichten van Jens Peter Jacobsen over de middeleeuwse legende van Koning Waldemar en Tove: de Gurrelieder. Zowel de tekst als de muziek van Schönberg weerspiegelen de krachtige invloed van Wagner op jonge componisten ten tijde van het fin-de-siècle.

De Gurrelieder zijn om meerdere redenen verbazingwekkend. Ten eerste werd het werk pas in 1911 afgerond, toen Schönberg niet meer uitsluitend in een voornamelijk laatromantisch idioom componeerde, maar al enkele van zijn belangrijkste atonale en meer moderne werken had geschreven. Ten tweede was het een zeer ambitieus project voor een haast onbekende en ongetrainde componist. Toch toont Gurrelieder volledige beheersing van de technieken van muzikaal narratief en klankschildering van Wagner en Strauss.

Philharmonia Orchestra staat vooraan op het gebied van kwaliteit, en wordt alom erkend als het meest vooraanstaande vernieuwende orkest uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. The Philharmonia was founded in 1945 by EMI producer Walter Legge, originally as a recording orchestra for the growing home audio market. We have worked with a who’s who of 20th- and 21st-century music. Herbert von Karajan, Otto Klemperer, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Arturo Toscanini and Riccardo Muti are just a few of the great artists to be associated with the Orchestra, and we have premiered works by Richard Strauss, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Errollyn Wallen, Kaija Saariaho and many others. We have always pioneered the use of technology to reach broader audiences for orchestral music. Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, in the heart of London, has been our home since 1995. We also have residencies at venues and festivals across England: Bedford Corn Exchange, De Montfort Hall in Leicester, The Marlowe in Canterbury, Anvil Arts in Basingstoke, the Three Choirs Festival in the West of England, and Garsington Opera. Central to all our residencies is a Learning & Engagement programme that empowers people to engage with, and participate in, orchestral music.

Esa-Pekka Salonen (conductor)

Esa-Pekka Salonen’s restless innovation drives him constantly to reposition classical music in the 21st century. In 2020, he will become the Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony. Until the end of the season 2020-2021, he is the Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor for London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, where the award-winning RE-RITE and Universe of Sound installations have allowed people all over the world to step inside the orchestra through audio and video projections. Salonen also drove the development of a much-hailed app for iPad, The Orchestra, which gives the user unprecedented access to the internal workings of eight symphonic works. As the Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he is now Conductor Laureate, Salonen was instrumental in opening the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall and made the orchestra one of the best attended and funded in the country. He is the Marie-Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence at the New York Philharmonic and Artist in Association at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. Additionally, Salonen is Artistic Director and cofounder of the annual Baltic Sea Festival.

Arnold Schönberg

Arnold Schoenberg was one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, but perhaps also one of the least listened to. Strikingly, Schoenberg was self-educated, even though his music is imbedded in complex music theory. It was Schoenberg who definitely departed from tonality and he developed the twelve tone technique. In this composition style, one has to use every twelve tones of the scale, before one can be repeated. The struggle to adhere to this dogma is clearly audible: his music is tense, hectic and particularly acute - and therefore at times not that accesible to occasional listeners. Nevertheless, his music and his liberation of tonality had an enormous impact on all composers that came after him. Together with the music of his students Alban Berg and Anton Webern, his style is often referred to as the Second Viennese School, parallel to the First Viennese School of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, who, in a similar vein, changed the history of music for good.

His most performed works are his string sextet Verklärte Nacht, his five Orchestra pieces op. 16, and his opera Moses und Aron. The development of Schoenberg's music can be heard in his Five String Quartets in particular.
