About the album

All the music on this recording has at least one thing in common: it seeks to find the oak tree in the acorn, or William Blakes ;world in a grain of sand”. One might almost write “grain of sound”, because all these works begin with very little — a note or two, something not far removed from silence, a seed that gives rise to an entire, and frequently paradoxical, world of consonance and dissonance, monologue and dialogue (and, here, trialogue), growth and retrenchment, height and depth.

Another common element between these works is that they were all written by musicians from different parts of what used to be the Soviet Union: Knaifel and Paiberdin are Russian, Gubaidulina also, though of Tatar heritage, and Kancheli is Georgian

Their highly economical attitude towards sound — we are not talking here about minimalism, but rather a kind of maximalism, expressed through limited musical means that can initially give the illusion of being minimal (a world in a grain of sand) — corresponds to the extreme, often fragile, states of spirit with which they deal, and which could only have been arrived at by musicians with such a background.

The Goeyvaerts Trio worked/rehearsed extensively with all of these composers personally and the result comes near to perfection!

Moderne Streichtrios in Vollendung

Goeyvaerts String Trio

The Goeyvaerts String Trio was founded by violinist Kristien Roels, violist Kris Matthynssens and cellist Pieter Stas in 1997 with the sole aim of performing twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire. The trio takes its name from the Belgian composer Karel Goeyvaerts, who played an important role in developments in European new music. Not only does the ensemble perform existing works, but it also actively commissions new compositions for string trio. After the trio released its CD recording of string trios by Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and Alfred Schnittke on the renowned international label Challenge Records, the recording received the highest possible rating in multiple music magazines, as well as a Gold Label from Klassiek Centraal, a nomination for best CD production for...

In 2012, the Goeyvaerts String Trio released a new CD entitled String Trios from the East featuring compositions by Sofia Gubaidulina, Alexander Knaifel, Oleg Paiberdin and Giya Kancheli. Of this recording, the Dutch music publication Luister wrote, ‘These three musicians’ performance here borders on the impossible in terms of concentration and precision.’ The trio’s album Stabat Mater, featuring Arvo Pärt’s Stabat Mater in just intonation and Ivan Moody’s Simeron, followed in 2014. With the support of over 500 international investors, the Goeyvaerts Trio raised £15,000. Of the trio, the Flanders Arts Institute wrote, ‘We already know they’re outstanding performers, but the fact that they managed to pull this off is proof that they’re also enthusiastic entrepreneurs.’ This CD was showered with the highest critical praise, heralded as Editor’s Choice in Gramophone and included in the list of the ten best Arvo Pärt recordings of all time. Dutch magazine Luister also ranked Goeyvaerts String Trio the highest ranking. The recording was most recently awarded an Edison, and the trio hailed by Klara as ensemble of the year. The Belgian city of Sint-Niklaas also honoured the trio with its 2014 Culture Prize.

Alexander Knaifel

Alexander Knaifel was born in 1943 in Tashkent but grew up in St Petersburg. He studied with Rostropovich and his relationship with him remained close until the great cellist’s death. Rostropovich features on Amicta Sole, the second ECM release of Knaifel’s music. Knaifel was born into a Jewish family, but is also attracted by the Orthodox church and Buddhism; he has spoken of seeking to convey something of the heart of faith by 'speaking in a low voice, hoping to hear a voice within oneself”. His music, described by the Frankfurter Rundschau as 'one of the most important revelations of recent years', belongs to that circle of near-contemporaries and associates from the former Soviet lands which includes Arvo Pärt, Giya Kancheli, Tigran...

But, although critics have found echoes of Arvo Pärt, John Tavener and Henryck Górecki in Knaifel’s quest for beauty, he has an idiom that is entirely his own, with its own expressive power.
ECM’s documentation of Knaifel’s work began with Svete Tikhiy (recorded 1997 and 2000), featuring the Keller Quartett with pianist Oleg Malov, and the voice of Tatiana Melentieva, the composer’s wife, processed by Andrei Siegle. Then, following Amicta Sole, the 2006 recording Blazhenstva presented two strikingly different compositions, inspirationally linked through the figure of Mstislav Rostropovich and played by his last cello student at the Moscow Conservatory, Ivan Monighetti.

Sofia Gubaidulina

Sofia Gubaidulina studied piano and composition at the conservatory of Kazan, and later the conservatory of Moscow. There, she studied under Nikolai Peiko, the assistent of Dmitri Shostakovich.  She is active as a composer since 1963. In 1975, she founded the Astreja, a group with Viktor Suslin and Vyacheslav Artyomov, which focused on improvisation with rare Russian, Caucasian, Central and East Asian traditional music- and percussion instruments.  Thanks to the renowned violist Gidon Kemer, who promotes her work since the 80s, and conductor Reinbert de Leeuw, who presented many of her works, her music is regurlarly performed in the West. The Goeyvaerts String Trio's overall characteristics as performers come clearly into focus: precise, unsentimental, challenging, self-denying, controlled and fastcinating.
