About the album

She belongs to the 'crème de la crème' of the Dutch jazz scene and Challenge Records is very happy to be able to work with her: saxophoneplayer Tineke Postma. The Dawn of Light is her new quartet album and debut on Challenge Records. It features a guest performance of Esperanza Spalding on the wonderful track "Leave me a place undeground"!

"I feel that the more I go on, the more my eyes open. It is as if through experiencing life, things start to dawn on me. And because of this personal growth, my music has grown along with it. The dawn is the growing consciousness of the beauty and magic of life, which can be described as the light. I hope people will be able to hear this in my music." Tineke Postma

This cd partly contains originals that Postma specially wrote for this quartet. "I have tried to write music that gives the four of us all the space to express ourselves. My compositions are more sketches than songs, which give a direction that can be the beginning of a musical journey each time we start playing. The songs are very diverse because I like all kinds of styles. Marc van Roon also contributed two songs. His harmonic and rhythmic ideas have given lots of inspiration to the quartet. As on my previous cd “The Traveller” (KTD6003 - featuring Geri Allen, Scott Colley and Terri Lyne Carrington) I recorded a composition of one of my favourite Brazilian composers Heitor Villa Lobos. His composition “Cancon Amor“ has such a beautiful melody, it really touches my heart every time we play it. We made an arrangement of the composition, trying to give it a personal touch. The song “Leave me a place underground” is based on a poem of Pablo Neruda. The first time I read this poem it struck me immediately. The text is talking about very fundamental feelings and emotions of human beings. I composed music for this poem, keeping Esperanza in the back of my mind. Although it contains odd time signatures, it sounds relatively accessible." Tineke Postma

Tineke Postma had her very successful cd-presentation concert on Friday April 22nd in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam
