About the album

Undeniably, the three composers sound like adults, each in his own way. Rossini was twelve when he wrote his Sonata No. 6 for Strings; Mendelssohn was about fourteen when he composed his tenth of twelve string symphonies; Korngold was seventeen or eighteen when he composed the String Sextet. All three works contain the diverse emotional moods that you would expect from adolescents. However, they convey a subtlety and token of experience that do not fit boys of this age. ‘You do not have to experience love to be able to write about it,’ Korngold told his paranoid father.

In Korngold’s case, music transcends age limits. He knows how to consider his great examples Richard Strauss, Mahler and the early Schönberg in creating a totally new language that is both musically and emotionally 'complete' and 'rich'. (from the linernotes of this CD by Vrouwkje Tuinman)

Later, Korngold would conclude that he never wanted to become a composer. ‘I only did it to make my father happy.’ He succeeded, but at a price. Forced by his father into a reactionary musical harness, Korngold never managed to break free. To modernise and develop along with his time. As a film composer, he would become highly appreciated, but he would never be able to match the successes he had as a teenager.

Rossini, on the other hand, would always follow his own course. That meant that he would stop in the prime of his career to focus on other things: travel, meeting friends, sleeping and enjoying food. That is why his success had no chance to fade.

Of the three, Mendelssohn is the one who, during his upbringing and later in life, would find the best balance between sense of duty and enthusiasm. ‘I want to be home, enjoy my family and compose diligently. I see all the rest as meaningless,’ he wrote, and he lived by these words. (from the linernotes of this CD by Vrouwkje Tuinman)

Future foreign engagements include tours to South Africa, Switzerland and a return to South America. EnsembleCaméléon made its debut performance at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 2007 and returns again in April 2010. The group also regular broadcasts for both Dutch and German radio and have recorded their own CD of works by Mozart for the German CD label Signum. In the upcoming years EnsembleCaméléon will release a CD every year with Challenge Classics. By programming originally and with logical corss-overs with other art forms, the ensemble endures to shake up the traditional approach to chamber music. Within its programming, the group endeavours to logically combine new compositions with the ‘gems’ of the traditional repertoire. Many Dutch composers have already written for the group, among whom Theo Loevendie, Cornelis de Bondt, Peter Adriaansz, David Dramm, Jan Bus, Johan de Mey, Guus Janssen, Simon Burgers, Arne Werkman, Joël Waterman, Edward Mebius, Thom Willems and Maarten Altena. Several collaborations with Dutch poet Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer have lead to enthusiastically received and thought provoking productions and performances at the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam and at the historical Felix Meritis in Amsterdam. One such productions was with the leading Dutch film actor Hans Kesting in a chamber music theatre production of Beethoven’s ‘Creatures of Prometheus’, with text by Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer. At the 2009 Holland Festival EnsembleCaméléon combined forces with young Dutch composer Reza Namavar and American guitarist Gary Lucas to create and perform a new soundtrack to the silent film ‘J’Accuse’ (1919) by Abel Gance. In 2009 EnsembleCaméléon was awarded the prestigious Kersjes Prijs. Felix Mendelssohn

As a composer he preferred looking back, rather than forward: his main examples were Bach, Handel and Mozart. It was Mendelssohn who retrieved Bach from oblivion and pushed for a revival of his music, which still lasts today. One century after its premier, Mendelsson performed the St Matthew Passion for the second time ever, in 1829.

Three years, earlier, on his 17th, he had already composed his masterfully overture A midsummer night's dream op. 21, based on Shakespeare's play. Today, it is still considered as one of the absolute masterpieces in all of the orchestra reperoire. His Violin Concerto op. 64 belongs to the most beautiful works of the 19th century as well. During his travels through Europe, he wrote his brilliant Italian Symphony, Scottish Symphony and the overture The Hebrides.

Although Mendelssohn had a prosperous career, his weak physique made him emotionally vulnerable. The death of his favourite sister Fanny became fatal: Mendelssohn died in the same year, at the age of 38.

Gioachino Rossini

Gioachino Rossini was born in 1797 in Pesaro, born to a hornist and opera singer. He spent his youth in the opera hall and at the age of 14 he started his studies to become a composer in Bologna, where he was taught to use a strict counterpoint technique. With his compelling, rhythmic music, which was characterised by its orchestral exuberance and coloratura fireworks, Rossini took over the world of music, to the frustration of critics and academics. When he reached the age of 31, he left Italy and traveled to London and Paris. His success made him powerfully rich. Rossini retired early. With almost 40 years still to live, he composed his last opera, Guillaume Tell, in Paris. Some reasons for his unexpected retirement could be his recurring illness, his financial stability and the adverse political and artistic conditions of the time. For 20 years, Rossini struggled with his health. He returned to Paris in 1855, where he recovered to some extent. Together with his wife, he organised special dinner parties for the upper class, and for those occasions he wrote his many chamber music works, which he referred to as his Péchés de Vieillesse. He died in 1868. Rossini's image is characterised by the many humoristic anecdotes about him. Yet, even though his comic operas are masterfully composed, his serious operas have been truly influential and formed the basis for the romantic operas of Donizetti and Bellini.
