About the album

Johann Gottlieb Graun was born in 1701 or 1702 in Wahrenbrück. He studied for several months between 1721 and 1723 with Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) in Padua. Tartini had a lasting impression on the young Graun; this can also be heard in his compositions. In 1740 Graun was nominated as concertmaster and conductor at the court-orchestra of Frederick II of Prussia. Graun’s duties included having to scout for new talent for the orchestra, and the direction of the court concerts in Berlin. After the Seven Years’ War, Graun retired from active duty for reasons of health. He died, highly esteemed, on 7 October 1771 in Berlin. Instrumental works utterly dominate the extensive oeuvre of Johann Gottlieb Graun as a composer. It is hardly surprising that among them – besides overtures, symphonies, quartets, trios and wind concertos – he wrote a great number of concertos and solo sonatas for the violin. He composed at least 83 solo concertos, double concertos and several ensemble concertos with solo violin. (A sinfonia for 8 winds & b.c., also performed by Moderntimes_1800, is to be found on CC72193) The concerto by Markus Heinrich Grauel on this CD may be taken as an example of Graun’s influence.

Muziek uit de tijd van de Verlichting, de 18e eeuw, wordt nauwelijks opgenomen. En dat is jammer, want deze muziek is zeker de moeite waard om te beluisteren. Laat de kans om kennis te maken met de muziek uit die tijd dan ook niet aan u voorbijgaan. De concerto's in deze opname zijn prachtvoorbeelden van de stijl en virtuositeit van Johann Gottlieb Graun en Markus Heinrich Grauel. Met het spelen op authentieke instrumenten laat het ensemble Moderntimes_1800 de muziek herleven zoals ze geklonken moet hebben, maar zonder een spoor van stoffigheid. Het omvangrijke oeuvre van Graun bestaat vooral uit instrumentele muziek. Hij componeerde maar liefst 400 werken, waaronder ouvertures, symfonieën, kwartetten, trio’s, cantates, liederen en soloconcerten voornamelijk voor viool en klavecimbel. Zijn muziek klinkt fris en energiek, toch is er maar weinig van in druk uitgebracht. De aan het begin van de 18e eeuw geboren Graun studeerde enkele maanden in Italië bij de bekende componist Giuseppe Tartini in Padua. Graun was diep onder de indruk van Tartini en dat hoor je ook terug in zijn composities. In de tijd tussen Bach en de Weense klassieken regeerde Frederik II over Pruisen. Deze koning, die ook muzikant en componist was, verzamelde de muzikale elite van Duitsland aan zijn hof. Waaronder ook Johann Gottlieb Graun, die in 1740 concertmeester en dirigent van het hoforkest werd. Het was zijn taak om nieuw talent voor het orkest op te sporen en de hofconcerten in Berlijn te dirigeren.

Moderntimes_1800 is een jong Oostenrijks kamerorkest opgericht in 2003 door Ilia Korol en Julia Moretti. Zij stelden een ensemble samen met een jonge generatie musici. Deze musici zijn niet alleen bedreven in het bespelen van authentieke instrumenten, maar ook bekend met de speelwijze van historische en eigentijdse muziek. Het ensemble geeft regelmatig prestigieuze concerten zoals op de festivals van Wenen en Salzburg.

Piroska Batori

Piroska Batori was born in Szeged/Hungary. She received her first violin lessons at the age of eight and only one year later was accepted into the class for outstanding students at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. She studied in Vienna and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama London and completed “with distinction” the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna in 2004. She is section leader in the moderntimes_1800 chamber orchestra and the Bach Consort Vienna, and is also a member of the Vienna Academy and the Wiener Kammersolisten.

He became an Austrian citizen in 2001. He played with Musica Antiqua Köln and is the leader of the Bach Ensembles of Joshua Rifkin and of the Spanish baroque orchestra RCOC; he is moreover a member of the Ars Antiqua Austria and of the Clemencic Consort. Ilia Korol has made numerous CD recordings. Since 2008, Ilia Korol has been adjunct professor in the faculty of Early Music at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.

Ilia Korol hails from Kiev, studied violin under Abraham Stern and Marina Iashvili at Moscow’s Music Academy and since 1997 has lived in Austria. In recognition of his artistic achievements he received Austrian citizenship in 2001.
He has performed as concertmaster of the Musica Antiqua Köln, the Bach Ensemble with Joshua Rifkin and the Spanish Baroque Orchestra RCOC and furthermore is member of the ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria and the Clemencic Consort. Ilia Korol has also featured on numerous CD recordings.
Natalia Grigorieva was born in Moscow in 1974 and studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory with Prof. Pavlova and Prof. Sobolev. Already after completing her studies Natalia Grigorieva was interested in historical performance practice and gave numerous concerts on 18th and 19th centuries original instruments or reconstructions of them.
Since 2000 Natalia Grigorieva has lived in Vienna and has taken Austrian citizenship. She trained as a designer and multi-media producer at the renowned SAE (School of Audio Engineering) in Vienna and has worked as a graphic artist and designer for numerous Austrian labels and artists.
Natalia Grigorieva has appeared as a soloist with the moderntimes_1800 orchestra in numerous concerts both in Austria and in other countries since 2003: for instance in the Wiener Festwochen, the Salzburg Festival, the RuhrTriennale 2005, the “Wege durch das Land” Festival, the Montreal Bach Festival and the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival.
