Wim Kegel: drums Calefax Reed Quintet:
Oliver Boekhoorn: oboe, English horn
Ivar Berix: clarinet
Raaf Hekkema: saxophone

This project is not only remarkable because of the interesting cooperation between classical and jazz and the choice of repertoire, but also for the fine arrangements that were for made for this particular line up, without piano! The result has been recorded in February 2005 at the prestigious new Bimhuis in Amsterdam. The CD will be released in April 2005 and an extended tour for 2005-2006 is planned Short biographies
Tony Overwater Trio consists of three top jazz musicians and is centered around one of Holland’s finest bass players, Tony Overwater. This gifted musician, who a/o played with Sunny Murray, David Murray, Paulo Fresu and Pat Metheny and who is a member of the renowned Yuri Honing Trio, is also a highly acclaimed composer contributing also to documentaries and ballets. His musical interest ranges from jazz to improvised and world music. In 2000 the Tony Overwater Trio & flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen and cellist Ernst Reijseger, created quite a stir when they released their Edison (Dutch Grammy) awarded CD ‘OP’, a tribute to bassist Oscar Pettiford. In 2003 Overwater received the VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize, thé Dutch jazz award and in the same year he was nominated for the Bird Award.
- A virtuoso on the bass with a disinclination towards showing off
(from jury’s report VPRO/Boy Edgar Award)
- ‘OP’ sets a new standard both artistically as well as in sound quality! (Algemeen Dagblad)
- Most beautiful imaginable tribute to Oscar Pettiford. (NRC)
- Breathtaking interpretations! (Parool)
Calefax Reed Quintet, founded 18 years ago, can be described as a classical ensemble with a ‘pop mentality’ and is known for its virtuoso performances, innovative programming and engaging concerts. The group performs standing up, often from memory, and always introduces itself and the program to the audience. And most importantly, the five musicians arrange, recompose and interpret music from eight centuries to suit their unique line-up: early music, renaissance, baroque, impressionism, jazz, or world premières, in the hands of Calefax it all sounds fresh and new. Calefax is recognized internationally for the quality of its ensemble playing and has toured throughout Europe both in new music forums and in renowned early music festivals. Their ever-growing discography (MDG) consistently gets enthusiastic reactions from the international music press.
- Stunning musicianship (Hampstead & Highgate Express)
- Extraordinary ensemble playing (BBC Music Magazine)
- Calefax masters the art of virtuoso arranging (Volkskrant)
- Listening pleasure from the first to the last second, musical perfection in every phrase (FonoForum) www.tonyoverwater.com www.jazzinmotion.com

TONY OVERWATER is one of the most notable Dutch bass players. He is a versatile musician, composer, soloist, band leader and supervisor in the Netherlands and far beyond. He graduated with honors from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He won the VPRO / Boy Edgar Prize, the Podium Prize, and an Edison. He worked with extraordinary musicians, including Karin Hammar, Yuri Honing, Pat Metheny, David Murray, Paolo Fresu, Eric Vloeimans and many others. Overwater is also known as an expert organizer. During his time at the conservatory, he founded the Jazz in Motion Foundation and the accompanying record label. | DIFFERENT FORMATIONS Overwater shares his passion for jazz, Arabic music and baroque music with the other members of the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio. With this trio, he began playing the violone; a 6-string bass instrument from the Baroque era, predecessor of the double bass. Overwater has been playing with the trio Jungle Boldie for over twenty years, with Maarten Ornstein on reeds and drummer Wim Kegel. This close formation formed the basis for a number of original projects, such as Far East Revisited with the Calefax Reed Quintet and the CD ‘OP’ with Ack van Rooyen and Ernst Reijseger, which received an Edison. Inspired by working with Lebanese singer Rima Khcheich, Tony Overwater developed a new style of playing on the double bass, incorporating the techniques and scales of Arabic music into a unique style. Working with various other bands and musicians, they form a much sought after attraction at festivals in the Middle East and Europe. Music for children has always had a special place in the heart of Overwater. He sees it as his mission to bring jazz and acoustic music of quality to the attention of kids. After the project Kikker Swingt! (Frog Swings!) with Max Velthuijs, he developed various other music shows together with singer-songwriter Lotte van Dijck. | PROJECT ORGANIZATION AND DOCUMENTARY MUSIC Being an architect’s son, Tony Overwater has a fascination for the visual aspects of music. In addition to writing music for various films, documentaries and dance shows, he and Joshua Samson initiated the ‘Guarder of the Key’ Project. A location-based concert, taking place on a set day of the month. Each time the performance is held at a different, secret, location and always with a different guest. The interaction between architecture, environment, music, musicians and the audience makes this special small-scale project a unique experience. Overwater recorded the music for the documentary Om de Oude Wereldzee about Abraham Kuyper, combining his expertise and affinity with Arabic music and classical European music.

“Calefax - five extremely gifted Dutch gents who almost made the reed quintet seem the best musical format on the planet.” – The Times – Five passionate wind players.
Virtuoso musicians and brilliant arrangers. The creators of a completely new genre: the reed quintet. They are a source of inspiration to a fresh generation reed players that follows in their footsteps. A classical ensemble with a pop mentality: meet Calefax.

The repertoire of Calefax spans many centuries of music. They breathe new life into classical chamber music by arranging it themselves to fit their own unique reed quintet line up: oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet and bassoon. Next to that, approximately two hundred original works have by now been written especially for Calefax by composers from all over the world. During their many travels and collaborations, they have drawn influences from world music, jazz and improvisation.
The group publishes sheet music of their own arrangements for reed quintet under the name Calefax Edition, so that they play a pioneering role and put this new genre on the map. All over the world new reed quintets are springing up, following Calefax’ example; from Argentine to New-Zealand and from the United States to Europe. By offering master classes and workshops at conservatories and universities, Calefax passes its specific methods and musical experience on to the next generations. In this way, the group functions as an inspiring laboratory for musicians and composers alike.

Calefax also inspires fellow musicians and artists from other disciplines. In collaboration projects, Calefax is always in search of unexpected repertoire or innovative presentation forms..

Calefax has to date released 19 CDs. All of these have been received by the international press with great enthusiasm. Calefax is regularly on tour, both home and abroad. International tours have included Russia, China, India, Turkey, Japan, South Africa, Brazil and the United States, performing on such prestigious stages as the Wigmore Hall, Het Concertgebouw and New York’s Frick Collection. In January 2013, Calefax had the honour of accompanying Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands on her state visit to Brunei and Singapore.
