Twee van Mozarts mooiste Pianoconcerten
Het 19e en 20e Pianoconcert behoren tot de mooiste van de uitgebreide serie pianoconcerten van Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Beide stukken worden gekenmerkt door een combinatie van kracht en elegantie, waarbij een enorme virtuositeit van de pianist vereist is. Zoals de meeste van Mozarts concerten zijn beide pianoconcerten driedelig, beginnend en eindigend met een vlot deel en een rustiger stuk in het midden. Het 19e Pianoconcert stond bekend als zijn tweede "Kroningsconcerto", aangezien het geschreven was voor de kroningsceremonie van koning Leopold II. Het 20e Pianoconcert, aan de andere kant, werd voor het eerst uitgevoerd in een informele sfeer in het Mehlgrube Casino in Wenen. De jonge Beethoven bewonderde Mozarts 20e Pianoconcert zo dat hij het zelf vaak heeft uitgevoerd.

De stukken worden op dit album uitgevoerd door pianist Nikolai Lugansky onder begeleiding van de Radio Kamer Filharmonie. Lugansky wordt internationaal erkend als een van de beste vertolkers van het pianorepertoire. Nikolai Lugansky is now acknowledged as one of the world's great interpreters of the piano repertoire. He regularly works with prominent conductors of major orchestras. His concerts, recitals, and chamber music performances throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas have earned him the rapturous applause of critics as well as audiences. His numerous recordings offer further evidence of his artistry. In 2000, he won the Diapason d'Or de l'Annee for his recording of the complete Chopin Etudes. His subsequent recordings of Rachmaninov Preludes and Moments Musicaux and Chopin Preludes each won him aDiapason d'Or as well. His disc of Rachmaninov Piano Concertos 1 & 3 has been awarded Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. His recording of Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 for Pentatone Classics was selected as Gramophone Editor's Choice (February 2004). The Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra

Critically acclaimed as one of the world’s foremost chamber orchestras, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra occupies a special place within the boundaries of the rich musical landscape in The Netherlands. Forty strong in number, the ensemble constitutes the perfect vehicle for the performance of the Viennese Classics: Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The orchestra’s dedication to the classics is matched by its equally passionate and longstanding commitment to contemporary music. For just under six decades, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra has made a persuasive case for new music and has been awarded numerous distinctions for its eloquent renditions of challenging compositions.
To reflect its dual allegiance to the music of both past and present masters, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra opted for a unique system of dual chief- conductors: the world’s leading contemporary proponent, Peter Eötvös took on his position in 1994 and Frans Brüggen, a groundbreaking force in the authentic performance movement, joined in 2001. Frans Brüggen is responsible for historically informed performances of the Baroque, Classical and early Romantic repertoire. Thanks to Peter Eötvös the orchestra has gained international recognition as a specialist ensemble for modern and avant-garde music appearing at venues ranging from its home base in the Concertgebouw and Vredenburg concert halls (Netherlands) and at modern music festivals from Warschau and Donaueschingen to the Budapest Spring Festival.
The Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra was disbanded in 2005 and restructured under the name Radio Kamer Filharmonie.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose actual name is Joannes Chrysotomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, was a composer, pianist, violinist and conductor from the classical period, born in Salzburg. Mozart was a child prodigy. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. Along with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven, Mozart is considered to be one of the most influential composers of all of music's history. Within the classical tradition, he was able to develop new musical concepts which left an everlasting impression on all the composers that came after him. Together with Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven he is part of the First Viennese School. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. From 1763 he traveled with his family through all of Europe for three years and from 1769 he traveled to Italy and France with his father Leopold after which he took residence in Paris. On July 3rd, 1778, his mother passed away and after a short stay in Munich with the Weber family, his father urged him to return to Salzburg, where he was once again hired by the Bishop. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death.
