Prachtige muziek en spannende verhalen voor kinderen
Een opname met twee wereldberoemde muzikale vertellingen, speciaal geschreven voor kinderen. Een schitterende vertolking door het Residentie Orkest van Peter en de Wolf van Sergei Prokovief en Het Olifantje Babar van Francis Poulenc. Kinderen zijn enthousiast over deze muziek en luisteren graag naar Frank Groothof, ja die van Sesamstraat, die er de verhalen bij vertelt, met zijn karakteristieke, prettige stem. Een aanrader dus om kinderen vertrouwd te laten raken met klassieke muziek. In het cd-boekje lees je meer over de avonturen van Peter en het olifantje Babar.

Frank Groothof, alom geroemd om zijn operabewerkingen voor kinderen, komt zelf uit een gezin met 11 kinderen. Zijn vader was kapper, maar Frank wilde wat anders, iets met muziek en toneel. Niet zo vreemd. Op zondag ging de hele familie naar de kerk, waar hij in het kerkkoor zong. 's middags zaten ze dan met z'n allen om de radio naar opera te luisteren. Bij die muziek verzon Frank hele verhalen. Zo raakte hij verslingerd aan de operamuziek, zoals hij zelf zegt op zijn website. Hij studeerde zang aan het conservatorium en speelde in een rock-musical. Via het Werkteater kwam hij in aanraking met de theaterwereld, wat resulteerde in vele theaterproducties, films en televisieseries. Theater is belangrijk voor de mens Frank Groothof: "Ouders die hun kinderen mee naar het theater nemen geven hen iets wat je met woorden niet zeggen kunt."

Sergei Prokofiev componeerde het muzikale sprookje Peter en de Wolf in opdracht van het jeugdtheater in Moskou. Het was de bedoeling om met dit werk kinderen te interesseren in klassieke muziek. Alle personages in het verhaal worden gespeeld door een specifiek instrument, en hebben ook een eigen thema. Het verhaal gaat over Peter, die graag meer van de wereld wil zien, dan het huis en de tuin van zijn grootvader. Hij mag niet verder naar buiten, omdat er in het bos een wolf rondloopt. Als het hek van de tuin op een dag openstaat grijpt hij zijn kans. Als hij ziet hoe de wolf de andere dieren in de buurt bedreigt besluit Peter om hem te gaan vangen.

Francis Poulenc componeerde de oorspronkelijke versie voor piano en verteller van Het Olifantje Babar in 1945. De muziek is gebaseerd op het beroemde Franse kinderboek van Jean de Brunhoff. Poulenc werd op een bijzondere manier geïnspireerd om deze muziek te componeren. Toen hij in 1940 aan de piano zat te improviseren, kwam een vijfjarig nichtje naar hem toe. Die vond de muziek maar saai, en vroeg Poulenc om Babar te spelen. Poulenc begon muziek te verzinnen bij het verhaal over het olifantje dat zijn moeder verliest en vervolgens naar de stad trekt. De muziek werd vaak in de familiekring opgevoerd, en uiteindelijk ook gepubliceerd.

Residentie Orkest The Hague proves that even in the 21st century, symphonic music can still be meaningful to large and diverse audiences. Its reputation as one of the finest orchestras in Europe makes it an appropriate figurehead for The Hague as a cosmopolitan city of justice, peace, and culture. The orchestra performs concert series in the Zuiderstrandtheater in Scheveningen and in addition performs at venues such as Concertgebouw Amsterdam, TivoliVredenburg Utrecht and De Doelen in Rotterdam. Special crossover and innovative productions are also provided at The Hague’s prominent pop venue Paard van Troje throughout the season. The Residentie Orkest performs regularly at various other major concert halls abroad. Tours have brought the orchestra to New York, Boston, Chicago, London and Vienna amongst others and the orchestra also performed in countries like Japan, China, Germany, France and South America. There are also many prolific collaborations with a wide range of partners, including the Dutch National Theatre, Gemeentemuseum and the Dutch National Opera. Recent seasons have seen a much acclaimed production of Messiaen’s rarely performed opera Saint François d’Asisse and Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites.

A rich history Since its first concert in 1904, the Residentie Orkest has developed into one of the prominent symphony orchestras of The Netherlands. Founded by Dr Henri Viotta, who was also its first principal conductor, it quickly attracted composers like Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Max Reger, Maurice Ravel, Paul Hindemith and Vincent d’Indy. Guest conductors included Arturo Toscanini, Bruno Walter, Leonard Bernstein and Hans Knappertsbusch.

After World War II, Willem van Otterloo was appointed chief conductor. He led the orchestra from 1949 to 1973 and built a strong reputation by combining high-quality performances with adventurous programming. Van Otterloo was succeeded by Jean Martinon, Ferdinand Leitner, Hans Vonk, Evgenii Svetlanov, Jaap van Zweden and Neeme Järvi.

Chief conductor Starting season 2018/2019 Nicholas Collon is chief conductor and artistic advisor of the Residentie Orkest. Richard Egarr will join the orchestra as principal guest conductor in 2019. Until the summer of 2019 Jan Willem de Vriend will act as principal conductor.

Sergei Prokofiev

Sergei Prokofiev was born in the countryside of Ukraine. He studied from 1903 at the conservatory of St Petersburg, under Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Anatoli Liadov among others. He was educated as a composer, pianist and conductor. Initially, he made a name for himself as a pianist. In 1918, he left the Soviet Union for the USA, but wasn't able to succeed, and he decided to move to Paris in 1920. His concert tours brought him back to the Soviet Union in 1927, who lured him back for good in 1936. Prokofiev died in march 1953, on the same day as Joseph Stalin.
Prokofiev is considered as one of the greatest Russian composers of the twentieth century, even though he wasn't a great innovator. He generally applied the strict classical forms and structures to his works and focused on a classical tonality, with a few exceptions of expressive dissonants and incidental bitonality. Yet, he is only explicitly neoclassicistic in his popular 'Classical Symphony', his first symphony composed in 1917. Many of his works show his humour, while his later works presented his darker, more serious side. One of his best known works is the musical fairytale Peter and the Wolf, which is popular among children all over the world.
